A380 Arrival

I watched the arrival of the new A380 on the TV news tonight and was really surprised to hear that the father of the pilot that landed the A380 today (Peter Probert) landed the first Qantas B747 in Sydney all those years ago.

Now, that's a Father and Son combo to talk about for years to come.

Was he the pilot or the co-pilot? He only had 3 rings on his sleeves and there was also an interview with another person who was referred to as a pilot but he had 4 rings on his sleeves. The person with 4 rings was sitting in the left hand seat.


Still not to take anything away from Peter's achievement, to bring in an inaugural flight in any role is something to be proud of and worth celebrating.

Clearly my TV is better than yours (HDTV) 'cos he's got 4 rings on his sleeve and he was referred to as "Captain".

You are quite correct there Ikara, he does have 4 rings on his sleeves. My mistake (and poor eyesight) when watching on Ch10.

I just watched it again on the ABC, and did notice that he was sitting in the right hand seat which is where the co-pilot normally sits. The person sitting in the left hand seat also had 4 rings on his sleeves.

I remember when the A330's first started flying, I was on flights where both were introduced as captains, and missing a first officer.So maybe having two captains in the early days of a new type is not so unusual

Loved the 747 (and still do) but I think this puppy is gonna absobloodylyluety surpass it. Can't wait for my 1st flight.

So who will be flying this A380 baby first?

I read a few month ago on AFF that one of the posters here won a writing competition and got 2 x J tickets on the inaugural MEL-LAX flight.

Wonder if they may do a TR of their journey.

I am seriously considering doing the double-inaugural, i.e. MEL-LAX QF93 on the 20th and returing that same night on QF94, or if the minister of war and finance says no doing the SYD-LAX flights a few days later but staying in LA for at least 2 days...

Either way I really want to fly on this plane, and if I have to suffer a bit of jet-lag and time zone confusion so be it...

After seeing the 1st Airbus in the mock up QF livery land a few years back, I have been counting down the days (yes, I know SG have been flying since last year, but it isnt the same, my loyalties lie elsewhere)

Having flown the A380 on SQ, albeit in Y, apart from the reduced noise from the engine, and the "newness" of the interior, I didn't find anything overexciting about the A380:-| I actually think the plane looks a bit ugly (esp. the front)...the main "wow" factor, IMHO, is its size!

PS: maybe the photos don't do it justice, but the green colour that QF have chosen for the economy seats look ghastly:shock:

It's me who won the trip (well technically my husband but what's his is mine and what's mine is mine too). Will definitely do a TR if Qantas ever get around to confirming everything....

It's starting to get very exciting now with all the media coverage. We are still a bit obsessed with A380 coverage. We fly to LAX on the 20 October and back to MEL on the 27 October so a TR somewhere in between plus photos on the 30th?

Glad to see QF finally got their A380, it looks amazing. Qantas and Marc Newson have done a fabulous job with the interior design. I was surprised to hear that Qantas have considerably less seats on their A380 than both SQ and EK. Typical EK, packing them in like they do on their 777.

I think Qantas will take the lead on customer experience on the A380.

Can't wait to fly on it.

That's a big call if one compares the F suites on SQ vs. the F Seats on QF...

With the arrival of this new lady, can someone explaine to me the reason for the new logo?

I thought that the kangaroo was redesigned due to the 'No Paint Areas' around the horizontal stablisers? Therefore, I was expecting the areas around these components to be white or unpainted grey.

However, as it can be clearly seen in all the photo, they are bright red with the white legs of the kangaroo clearly infront.

By my reasoning, if the 'No Paint Areas', doesn't that mean they are painted red?

Interesting to see the photos on Picture board: Qantas A380 - Business Traveller - especially the J lounge area - the first photos I have seen of it. It seems small given (on a full flight) it needs to be shared by 72 pax, which makes me wonder if the space could have been put to better use - perhaps as a bar?

It's good to see genuine interior shots finally (that arent marketing mockups or work-in-progress) - the extra long centre console on the Skybed Mk2 is really evident on these shots too. oh - and the photo labelled as Economy is actually Premium Economy - I think.

I had the same impression - but it seams to have just been a desire to spruce up the brand a bit and avoid the legs of the roo going through the horizontal stabiliser as they do with the old branding (but not the new roo) on the A330, 737 and 767 - see 737 tails and 767 tails
