simongr, gave thoroughly enjoyed reading your TR and have learnt a lot about the VA product. Thank you for your honesty as each area related to your feelings - there are specific areas where we agree

Great feedback for Virgin.

Hopefully we can read more virgin DJ/QF comparison trip reports from QF matched customers soon!
I'll be happy to oblige as well - was going to use the AFF meet in Oct, but a family engagement I think is going to torpedo that plan.

Looks like my first VA flights will be BNE/SYD/BNE.

Well i'm back from my trip, so here goes:

Leg 1: DRW - SYD on QF

So my collegue and I needed to attend a conference this past weekend in Canberra. Not wanting to miss out of the SC's we did our trip via SYD, which departed DRW 1:45am (I think). No issue with getting through security, but at DRW there never is.

Arrived at the QC and immediately asked the Lounge Dragon if we could use points to upgrade our seats to J. Without even looking she says to me "No i'm sorry, there aren't any left". She then bails my collegue up (who is a PS) and told him that he needed to be a member of the QC to enter. I looked at her blankly and said he is coming in as my guest - she gave me a quick sarcastic smile and said very well then (personally I would have thought it was obvious he was my guest as she checked us in together and we were on the same booking).

I proceeded inside and ordered myself a G&T and grabbed a plate of wedges (a new addition for DRW QP). I sat down and started to eat, and 20 minutes later started to feel somewhat flushed and quite i'll. I ran into the gents and needless to say spent a good five minutes praying to the porcelin gods. Culprit - Wedges.

I had another G&T and felt much better, then we got called for our flight. Assigned seat 4A and 4B. Jumped on the plane to be rather annoyed when I saw that there were no less than 5 vacant J seats after the door closed. I mentioned it to my collegue who told me "Yeah when you were in the gents, I jumped on my iPad and saw if I could buy a J seat and there were plentry left" ie no "quick - less than 5 seats remaining".

The rest of the flight was uneventful and to the normal QF standard. Hostie was nice, but no greeting from the CSM which I always get on a DRW - BNE flight.

Leg 2: SYD - CBR on QF

Upon arriving at circa 6am, we immediately went to the Syd J Lounge to ask if we could be put back to this afternoon's flight to CBR (to meet up with another collegue who was on a much later service). Also this would have given us time to head into Sydney and catch up with a mate for lunch at Rockpool.

The attended genuinelly did check but informed me that as it was too close to boarding time, she couldn't change it. I accepted that and headed into the lounge for a quick pitstop.

Assigned 6A and 6B. Uneventful trip again, but on a side note I did get two of those energy bars (I love them!).

We arrived in CBR and had some time to kill till check in at the hotel (early 10am one). Both of us were feeling pretty over it, so we headed to the CBR J lounge.

I must say at this point, we had possibly the nicest lounge dragon ever (in fact I don't want to use the term dragon). We both obviously looked over it and she was more than happy to just chat and be generally welcoming. I asked her to point me in the direction of the shower (never been to CBR J lounge before, only CL) which she did and handed me a Towel and Razor. Very nice lounge, with very nice bathroom/showers.

Meanwhile my collegue had gone into the J lounge and tried to toast a Croissant. End result was he lit the bloody thing on fire. (mental note to self: never guest him into a J lounge again). We all had a laugh about that, and I went to fix myself some Bacon and Eggs. Sadly I was informed by the food guy that it ended at 9:00am - it was 9:03 - Simsy was not impressed.

I settled for some yoghurt and muselli and went and read the paper.

Before leaving for the Hotel we snuck into the Virgin side of the airport and using the new ATA, had a look around. Whilst obviously not as new as the QF J lounge, still very nice with very good staff. Watch VA's new ATR land and the PM's jet take off. had a barrista made coffee (which was just divine) and headed off to the hotel.

Leg 3: CBR - MEL on VA

After a weekend of heavy drinking... er I mean an interesting conference, it was time to go home. A mate of mine in Melbourne has scored us reservations at Rockpool in Melbourne (after our non event in Syd) at 7:30. We arrived at the Airport at 1:30PM and headed to the VA lounge.

When I arrived the dragon was having a VERY heated conversation with a customer on the phone and bluntly told him she wasn't going to help him (nb I didnt have a problem with this, but alludes to a later incident, keep reading). I handed her my VA Platinum card and said i'd like to check in for the 5pm CBR to MEL. She smiled and said not a worry and went about her business. Oddly, she didn't hand me any boarding passes - thats when I should have been worried.

I normally travel with my boss who is a CL. In CL they don't give you a BP as they constantly try to upgrade/get you a better seat. They give you one just before boarding (they come hunt you down in the lounge, which i've never figured out how they remember who you are but anyway I digress).

About an hour before my flight, another collegue calls me up and says "i'm at the airport, where are you?" I told him I was in the lounge and invited him in. I went out to the general VA waiting area, grabbed him and walked back in. The VA dragon asked for my card again and she scanned it through. She asked my collegue what flight he was on and said she would call it when ready.

the next 50 minutes passed without incident (I must say the food at the CBR VA lounge was very enjoyable).

She called our flight and I proceeded to the Lounge desk and waited. She looked at me blankly and said "Yes can I help you?" I asked for our boarding passes and she said "What haven't you checked in yet?" I said back to her that yes, we checked in almost 4 hours ago, and that she had done it, but not given us boarding passes. She looked at me blankly and said "I haven't checked you in, sorry check in is closed". I told her I have been here for 4 hours and I needed to make a connecting flight in Melbourne. She told me the 7pm flight to Melb was cancelled and she couldn't help me. she told me it was my fault and I should have checked in.

And this point, I was less than happy.

I asked her if she remembered me coming in several hours earlier, she said she did. I asked her if she remembers requesting mine and my collegues VFF cards, she said she did and that she was in the process of checking us in... and thats when the penny dropped in her head. She apologised and said that she was frustrated by the customer on the phone and she must have gotten distracted. She said that she had only "checked my card into the lounge" but not the flight.

I bluntly told her that was her problem, not mine and she needed to get me on that flight. I was preparing myself for a heated argument and an overnight in CBR because of VA stuff up, but was pleasantly surprised. she made a call and fixed it there and then.

1 minute later, thanks to Priority boarding, I was sitting in seat 3A with my collegue in 3B.

Uneventful flight to MEL, no food service as it was a 35 minute flight.

jesus I would not have been happy during that conversation... Good that you got on your flight.

Leg 4: MEL - DRW on VA

Sorry about the delay in the leg 4 post, was down the street having a coffee in our lovely 36 degree/80% humidity.

So we arrived at MEL airport, $35 cab ride later, walked down to the lounge to find it almost deserted.

Was greeted by a lovely Lounge hostie named Lidija on her CASA pass or whatever its called (although she had another badge that said Mel). Asked her to move my collegues partner to sit with us (she'd been shopping in MEL while we were in CBR). She couldn't have been more helpful, she told us that my collegue and had been moved to PE by those who decide that kind of thing upstairs, and whilst she couldn't get my collegues partner in PE, she could put he in the first row of non-PE and lock off seats for her.

We were happy with this and about to proceed to the lounge, when the hostie asked us if we'd like towels for a shower before we flew (had 3 hrs to kill) I said yes thankyou that would be lovely. She went about being most helpful (granted the lounge had a total of 9 people including staff) but it made me very happy.

I looked around the new lounge and sure enough, it looks just like the pictures :p We were sitting down in the quite zone when next thing I know the hostie appeared and said "good news, we've upgraded your other guest to PE as well" and she had come over to ask if she would prefer the window or aisle seat (said she thought she'd ask as she didnt want to offend).

We were very happy, and got on board in rcord time, again thanks to Priority boarding.

Lovely flight home, were offered anything on the menu free of charge, but no they didn't have pies on an early morning flight :p

All in all I was very impressed with Leg 4. Only thing that would have made it better would have been if we'd had the new planes.

Will do a summary post after this... have a meeting to go to!

Cheers

Simsy

Summing up

QF flights

All around it was good. It was consistant so far as I got the normal half-coughd attitude from the staff at DRW and despite the best efforts of SYD, I couldn't change my flight. I did contemplate missing it on purpose but decided against it.

Positives:
  • CBR J lounge - couldn't have been more helpful if they tried
  • SYD J lounge - they tried, but failed.
Negatives:
  • Being told there were no J seats when their clearly were
  • Nothing... well nothing spectacular - nothing that made me go WOW your making me feel like a Platinum FF (afterall this trip was about comparing the two).
VA Flights

Again all around it was good. Enjoyable service - granted on very old feeling planes, but QF have the same problem.

Negatives:
  • Stuff up at CBR lounge
  • No spirits in either VA lounge :(
  • The shower at CBR lounge - its disgusting and you tap it one mm to the left and its boiling hot, one mm to the right and its freezing cold
  • Not having the new 737's from MEL (ok not really a negative just being cheeky :p )
Postives:
  • The piece of mind that when there was a stuff up, it was fixed - granted I had to get a little grumpy, but the attendent swallowed her pride and just fixed it.
  • Not having to ask for an upgrade, just being given it and the apology when they couldn't upgrade my collegues partner who has no status and wasn't on our booking.
  • Getting the upgrade come through for my collegues partner, even though again, we didn't ask for it (nor did we ask for ours)
  • The lounge staff at MEL
  • Priority boarding
  • Free food and drink. Granted QF do this too, but on QF its set menu at set time. On VA I can have it whenever I want (more like International J)

The winner?

I'm going to have to give it to VA - they honestly gave me the "wow" feeling that I haven't had on QF for some time.

If they hadn't of fixed the stuff up, it would have ruined my night, but they did.

That being said, I won't stop flying QF. What I will do is fly VA instead of Jetstar when i'm paying for the trips (work pay for QF).

Does anyone know how to Tag users in this post? I'd love to tag RedRoo and Velocity so they know about my experience...?
