Forget about QC or VGW, as the earn rate is 0.5points per $1 spent on purchases.
QC and VGW are only good for those who have time to play with, and while no annual fees is a plus, its earn at a snails pace. Or for those who can't get a (true) CC.
The only reason I have both, is that my work can't show me earning Aud$35000 a year, or even $15000.
And I got burnt going to deep hock a few years back.
Amassing points, without flying, and not relying too deeply on CC sign on bonuses, its hard to amass points.
Flybuys is no use either, as they didn't link to VA.
ER is also a slow way to collect QFF points, (apart from the CC side), you have to spend $31 to get 1 QFF point.

Yeh but that's because the points only kick in at $30. If you spend $100 you get 70 points and then pay for it with a 1.5 point per dollar Amex and you have another 150 points so that's 220 points. Do the same thing for fuel and it's an easy 10-20k points a year. Slow and steady wins the race.

Struggling to use your Frequent Flyer Points?

Frequent Flyer Concierge takes the hard work out of finding award availability and redeeming your frequent flyer or credit card points for flights.

Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, the Frequent Flyer Concierge team at Frequent Flyer Concierge will help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Personally (in my case) i am not able to pass the credit assessment for a true CC.
Also income does not match up to $15k. Hard to do wages summary.
So all my activities are flight related.

A black Mastercard / Amex combo with Westpac has resulted in us accumulating points at a faster rate ... we had a plat M'card / Amex with them but they informed us we weren't getting all the points (capped at about $7K spend p/mth) so they offered us a black card at the same annual fee as the Plat cards and we haven't looked back.

Once in US you can trim your food costs if you have young kids...
We found 3 meals fed four of us comfortably.
A month in US eating in diners, waffle houses, Ihop etc didnt kill us and the kids thought it was cool. The coffee , generally was pretty good. Non of this melbourne black apron barista bitter rubbish ( dives for cover wearing asbestos pants )

thanks for starting this - am watching eagle eyed as I'd like to take hubby and 2 teenagers to UK next year and am chasing points madly without spending anything I wouldn't normally.

They are ways and then there are WAYS.
Intro...
Some 'shopping' schemes (all really) are set up to benefit the company not the shopper. They aim to get you to increase your spending by increasing the Q of items you buy as well a the cost of items you buy (targeted, if properly working, offers).

However, that's broad brush and broad brush means lazy programming mostly these days. So they are full of holes.

The meat

Most programs have a simple 'age' trigger. So if you were to sign up everyone in your family, once the age is over 16 then they become a target even if they never use their card. They are 'encouraged' to use their card with offers.

So whoever is the 'key' shopper has everyone's cards. Each shopping outing you 'tease' the system if you do not have any offers (worthwhile). For example, we use one card "A" with the purchase $31 worth of stuff from WOW, and then do not use that card again until we receive an offer. Given only earn QFF > $30 there is no incentive if you can game it. Coles has a different break-even for gaming but still is very worthwhile.

For example, in last quarter got 17K bonus points at Coles and $80 vouchers (cash back/discount off total bill). At WOW got $95 of 'vouchers' and 9K bonus points. Actual spend at both (pre-vouchers) in total was under $4,000. (BTW - can triple dip at WW petrol using Myer One card, cc and rewards card). I do not consider discount off an item as a voucher but it can get bonus points. You need to be selective and not jump on first offer.

EG: Spend $120 get 500 bonus points spend $150 get 1,000. If you do not activate offer, then normally next week, but sometimes two weeks, you get spend $100 get 500, then 1 wk later, spend $80 get $20 voucher (used $20 voucher last night). Do not activate offers along the way unless you are intending to use it. Do not be an easy target.

Note: Do not use 'card' every time. So with WOW you get a 4 cent discount petrol voucher on the bill - DO NOT USE REWARDS CARD AT WOW PETROL OUTLET UNLESS YOU HAVE A BONUS OFFER when redeeming a 'paper' not 'electronic' discount. Their system DOES have that gaming check built into it.

I'll get the ANZ FF cc for my husband but I'm a SAHM so I don't have an income so can't get a separate card. I grabbed the Bankwest bonus points offer last month too which will be great. Do appreciate all the advice coming since this started - great forum.

I have not read this entire thread so it might have been mentioned already. Don't overlook things like council rates, water and phone etc that might be payable by cc, but don't fall into the unreasonable surcharge trap. Also check how many top up points you can buy. If a family member owns a business this opens up a whole new range of possibilities. I wish you well with your challenge and look forward to a TR.

Buzzard - can you please explain 'check how many top up points you can buy'? I'm not familiar with this...

I try to pay most of my Mums bills too by Amex card that earns 1.5 points per $1 ( though have to be careful of surcharges) also able to pay some bills for work too which helps. Hoping to pick up more tips along the way as just burnt 280K points each for OWE Award and had to come back early because of family illness and need to save again for next year.

Top ups only work if you have 85% of points needed for an award.
$20 per 500.
But you cannot buy more than 15% in the year.
You also must have an award in mind.
If you need 10k and have 9k, you can buy the difference. Bug the difference must not be more than 15%.

Buying top up QFF points are still doable under the enhancements, or enchancements.
But now you ore the person wanting it, has to ring up, where as before, I am sure I could buy the top up points I needed online with QF's website.

You still need to keep in mind the cost of the commercial fare for the sector because the cost of buying points plus the hefty airline fees, charges plus taxes could mean that you may end up paying more than purchasing a retail ticket that would earn points & SC.
