Now I don't know if it constitutes as sneaky, but here goes.

On a 738 today I was in 4D and a man was in 4E with his cello (with seatbelt) in 4F. He was NB and had a travelling partner in 5E. I was able to get 4D at about T-79, where that was the only row 4 seat available. 4C had what I presume to be a CL or P1 (the CSM came unprompted multiple times with some J wine), 4B shadow and 4A probably a WP/SG (not offered any wine).

I'm guessing when said cello person booked the ticket, that is taken into account and more or less automatically assigned? It looked *just* too big to be easily put into any other row but you would be able to do it with some careful positioning.

I don't know what the policy is, but you could say such an allowance could be up for abuse in carrying an empty cello case

First time I've seen this, not complaining, just sayin'...

Not sure I could travel with a cello case just to get Row 4. It would be bigger than me.:)
Seems a bit of an overkill.

I wonder if the end pin (to support the cello in playing position) needs to be checked in, as it could be used as a weapon? ;)

Not to mention he would have had to buy the seat for the cello (usually around 2/3 of the price of the other seat internationally and often with no discount domestically). Generally the spike doesn't have to be checked no.
