Looks like some common sense may be applied. I still think they should profile more.

Thanks for the links.

I'm going to go off on a tangent straight away. I just can't see the point of profiling. If you pick all the people of a particular outside type, how does that stop the Tim Mcvie's of the world?

I think The Simpsons might have the security tunnel the world needs.

I can't find a picture, but any fans of the show will probably remember and episode where Homer walks through a long X-Ray tunnel. While most other people are carrying weapons or other objects, the X-Ray determines that homer is in fact an ape. This kind of tunnel, though probably emits high doses of radiation, would streamline the security process. While somewhat far fetched, it's more likely to be a success that simply profiling, and would be somewhat more passive and less physically intrusive than current procedures. Just a thought.

That's not how profiling works, though - or at least not if it's done properly.

Profiling looks at how people are *behaving*, not at racial characteristics - there was an article recently on how Israel does it that was very interesting -

Also found this while I was looking for it, on how the surveillance systems support the profiling:

The security guys recognise him immediately "Hi Homer".....

Thanks for the links, IIRC that israelification one has been posted here a couple of times.

Actually that is exactly how racial profiling works.

And there is some suggestion that Israel uses racial profiling, El Al - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Predictive profiling is also about more than just looking at how people behave, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Predictive_profiling

Wikipedia said:
Predictive profiling is a method of threat assessment designed to predict and categorize the potential for criminal and/or terrorist methods of operation based on an observed behavior, information, a situation and/or objects

That's the same theory (physiologically and technically) behind the infamous Nude-o-Scopes that have been causing much furore in the US.

So I assume your post is facetious:?: Of course for Homer it wouldn't matter, he's already sterile and waived his right to sue for a cool $2,000.

Mmm, but no-one mentioned *racial* profiling specifically, did they. In fact the article specifically said they *weren't* going to use racial characteristics as part of the profiling process:

Bisignani said the profile would be based on details travellers provide when buying their ticket, including whether they had paid by cash or credit card, and would be checked by national security or intelligence services.

But IATA global security director Ken Dunlap said the system would not be based on racial or ethnic profiling. "We are completely opposed to checking people by the colour of their skin or by their nationality," he added.

I'm not sure you can guarantee that it won't be used as a profiling attribute, even if it isn't put into policy.

Conversely, it would be difficult in some cases to defend a screener who perhaps genuinely is not racially profiling someone but the screened individual may feel they are being oppressed as such and makes such a claim.

The fact of the matter is that it will happen almost irrespective, but the most that an organisation can do so not as to formally endorse such a prejudice is not to put it into policy, or rather specify that the policy will not include racial attributes in profiling.

And no one mentioned *predictive* profiling specifically either.
The article may say that, yet, as I posted, it seems that racial profiling is used in practice.
