A longer brush with Broome

Tomorrow morning, it’s on the bird to Broome.

This time, it's until Friday - in contrast to the overnight brush in December 2020 that was done to meet a status-extension offer (A Brush with Broome), some brief brushing passing through in June 2021 (Brushing Broome to points further N) and in October 2021 preceding a voyage back to PER (WAving - from a west coast voyage).

This time, it’s taking a long brush and sweeping into the Broome resort thing. We’re staying at Cable Beach Club in a Pool Terrace Studio in the adults-only pool section (Accommodation - Cable Beach Club Resort). The last thing PJM wants during school holidays is to be tripping over kids.

Brother and SIL coming along, too.

Cable Beach Club is the development that put Broome firmly on the tourist map. I haven’t stayed there before; let’s see how we go…

I stayed at Cable Beach Club Resort quite a few times in the past and enjoyed it. Will be interested to hear how you find it. Used to stay in the standalone bungalows.

First order of business on Tuesday morning was getting up at dawn to walk along the beach to see if we could spot any turtles hatching. A small army of volunteers tag nests laid in about October and check them for hatching in December-February, providing the data to the state wildlife department.

We didn’t see any little tackers, but there were turtle tracks among many crab and lizard tracks providing evidence of some overnight hatchlings making the journey towards the water.

Then breakfast at Green Mango Café on the main street in Chinatown – almost next door to Sun Pictures. Recommended – good coffee, they know how to cook bacon, and eggs in all guises, and the sourdough is good.

Then, suitably nourished, it was tagging along after the women to pearl shops – of which there are about ten or more in town. The good museum next to Willie Creek Pearls wasn’t open because it’s low season, but the display luggers are always on view.



Then the afternoon just doing the resort thing around the pool before heading to Matso’s, the Broome brewery institution, for dinner. Tuesday night has a band and is also open mic night.

Wednesday was a full day outing to Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm and James Price Point.



We first did the pearl farm presentation, then on the high incoming tide went out by boat for a two-hour spin among the surge and whirlpools and a tour of the local coastline and islands, swinging past the pearl farm on the way back.



And Bingo! Out popped a pearl. Buffed up, measured and valued. Now owned by SIL. The local indigenous people have a tradition of carving/painting pearl shell in a characteristic manner.
