A couple of questions from an AAdvantage newbie

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

I have come across several anecdotes of AAdvantage member being able to book awards on Qantas where such was not available for QFF members.

It may very well be that QFF make more awards available for certain/routes/periods for AAdvantage (or other oneworld) for commercial / contractual reasons- easy enough to do with modern GDS's.

Interesting. What route have you heard in particular ? Feel free to PM if you'd like.

I've been able to book J Aawards on QF SYD-BKK-SYD as an OWS on AA when mrsdrron as a WP could not book them through QFF.Simiarly 2 J Aawards BNE-AKL.

Right. Duly signed up two extra parties. AS we have a business hosting plan they look quite real!. Now, working out if the goldfish needs one too!

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

IME, the cc used to book flights has to be in the name of the AA account holder, though I understand there may be ways around that.

Ah, is this right? I can still work that as both kids have credit cards in their name that attach to mine and Mr P's account. Now to sign them up too!

Same. Booked two F awards on Qantas on AA that never showed on Qantas redemption site.

Well I always use my CC when booking flights or awards on mrsdrron's account.
As it is legal for a child to have an account when they cant get a CC I am sure my new son Rex could use my CC booking an Award.

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

The name is not checked against the credit card number for AA bookings done online or over the phone.

I've booked with my CC number but then just put the name and address as per the account that I am booking from.

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

Well. I now have a few spare accounts to play with. Might have to book as separate sectors to get within the 100K limit or hope there is a another promo when I am looking to book.

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

What route(s)? Guessing not a transpac one...

Dubai - Sydney on A380. My first taste of Qantas first! 2 seats on same flight.
I'm currently looking at aa for a trip to Canada but can see the issue with availability so will be building that with Alaska Air and internally with aa.

Oh that's priceless. I guess money is money.

Wonder why they limit people to 100k purchase of points a year?

Off to get my cat, budgie, lizard  an account. Wait 30 days. Book. Hold. Buy.

Limiting points goes some way to ensuring member who actually fly can access award seats. Otherwise everyone would just buy points as a way to securing cheap premium travel.

I'm sure the talk about cats and lizards is tongue in cheek. Accounts must be in the name of a real person. Account audits establishing otherwise would lead to suspension and loss of tickets.

As am I. :p. They are in my sons names and both have a credit card linked to my cards.

If a falcon can fly first class, and an emotional support pig is allowed , I don't see the harm in a lizard having a FF account. It might like caviar...

I think you guys rushing in to get accounts in the name of you cat etc need to slow down a bit. I was always under the impression that the name on the credit card needed to match the name on tha AA account that was being used for the booking. I decided to test that in case I was
mistaken and indeed got this error message:

(This was a live booking that I actually want, I put in a real credit card number but I have obviously changed the name subsequently)

I'm not sure how Nizar got past this. Happy Trails mentioned a workaround; anyone care to enlighten us?

You are correct. It used to be easier than this. Recently I have successfully made bookings using my children's accounts (well under 18) via the telephone but each call resulted in a stewards enquiry before the transaction proceeded.
Caveat emptor.....

Interesting. Maybe I'm being naive in thinking that most AA members living in the US wouldn't be all that interested in awards that don't involve travel to/from the US.

I don't know how to be more subtle but if you follow the instructions in red then that may help... ;)

What I usually do is exactly what Kangol suggested.

For example. Say my name is John Smith. I have a CC under my name which says John Smith on it. I make two AA accounts. One is under my name, John Smith. The other is under some random on the street, his name is Brian Williams.

John Smith's account is already maxed out for the year. So I buy with Brian Williams' account. When I pay for Brian William's points purchase online I put in my actual credit card number, but then for the name I enter the name as per the AA account which I am buying for, which is Brian Williams.

And a month later Brian's account is maxed out too, so then Brian's sister "Emily" who also has an account under her name "Emily Williams" - she buys miles online she will also use the CC number for John Smith, but for the name I would enter the account holder, which would be Emily Williams.

Hope that makes sense. As far as I know AA do not use a system that matches names with the CC number.
