There's been quite a lot of debate around the subject of going Silver for the first time. A good search will dig these up for you.

My advice on this remains pretty much the same: Go for silver IF, and only IF:

  • you're likely to re-qualify in next and subsequent years,
  • you are extremely picky about seat selection, or
  • you are planning travel to the US on AA soon (priority security/boarding, miss the nightmare of the TSA).
If neither of these apply to you, save your coin for something more worthwhile.

Almost as bad is coming in on the inbound flight when there's a tailwind - There have been several times I have greeted the "desk dragon"* when she opens the QP doors at 5am, after spending 30-45 minutes swearing at the e-Passport machine that's not working.

* Desk Dragon should be construed as a term of endearment - I have had nothing but good experiences with the QP folks in AKL

I have one good experience with them. On my way to Santiago they let an extra traveller in QP =)

After looking through all this I've got a question for whoever can help.

I'm not the best at reading mileagemonkey so any help would be great.

If I get a flight SYD-AUK with LAN Full flexible economy on the first leg and premium business on the return leg how many status points would I be looking at?

40 for economy and 80 for business.

Cheers,

Thanks everyone for your help!

Most of the raeson behind getting back to Silver are:

a. Travelling to US in October with better half
b. Seat Selection

Amazed at LAN prices - so thanks for all your advice.

Cheers.

I should mention SYD-CBR-MEL in J on a weekend with a return in Y may come out not much more expensive than a run to AKL all up when accom etc is factored in, its a less time consuming option albeit at a higher price.
