Just having a read through the new Virgin Australia fare rules following the launch of Future Flight credits today.

Does it strike anyone else as odd that there's now an $80 fee to get a refund if you cancel an Economy Freedom ticket? Has this always been the case, or is it new?

That's supposed to be a flexible ticket, so I thought you could previously cancel for a refund without paying a fee. You can still cancel for a travel bank credit for no fee.

I don't think it is new. Qantas charge $99 if you want a refund on a Flex ticket.

I don't think what used to be called "Fully Flexible" exists in Aust any more.

My understanding is that this is always the case if you want your cash back. But no fee if you get it back as travel credits.

This ⬆⬆⬆

it's been the case as far as I can recall. Back in the day ISTR a thread on it.

Thanks for the responses. Fair enough - I must not have been paying enough attention before! I just assumed that flexible would mean "refundable" on an airline that isn't a LCC.

Looks like the full J fares are still fully refundable.

It's always been the case. I booked a return trip HBA-MEL-CBR last October for May this year, Freedom fare one way, full J for the return fare. VA cancelled them both in March/April when COVID hit and all flights in/out of Tassie were canned. No problem getting the J fare refunded in full but I still had to pay the $80 fee to get my Freedom fare refunded, despite the fact VA cancelled the flights, not me.
