787 J seat question

I have 5K booked but 3A is available.

Not been in a 787 I'm not sure how row 3 will be impacted by a child in row 2 (I do like my sleep).

Anyone able to comment on the noise factor?

Seats are identical. Main advantage of row 3 over row 5 is earlier on for food service. Otherwise, as you noted you might be closer to a baby. Only you know how much that will impact you.

Advantages of row 5. quicker to disembark since it's usually via the doors at the back of that J cabin. Also, first for rows of J there are no usable overhead bins for the centre seats. Therefore the centre folks will be using the window seats one. Impact is very minor IMHO.

So really it's a toss up between faster first meal/drink service verse the risk of being possibly closer to a baby who may or may not make noise.

That's what I thought. I'm sure there are bigger issues right now.
I'll only have a backpack on board so the bin isn't a problem.
Just looked and in 3K on the way back from YVR, and it's full of WP and Gold already so it's the back of the bus or nothing.
I guess I'll risk the noise factor.

Having been on a business class seat on Singapore Airlines (on an A350, seat 20K) a few months ago, I'd 110% recommend to sit as far away as possible to a seat with a bassinet.

I wasn't able to sleep at all due to a baby in front of me crying all flight.

The parents whilst understandably stressed, weren't even apologetic about it and were also somewhat obnoxious.

Made what would have been a nice flight a pretty horrible one.

Politically incorrect but I agree. A screaming kid in a premium cabin on a night flight is not nice.
I just looked up and row 5 has no window so I am now in 3A out and 3K back.
I want the seat next to the window and this is the best option. Despite being WP I'm confident by row 10 they'll only have the braised beef and rice left so I'll have to take one for the Team.

Where did you see no window in row 5? I've not sat in row 5 but never noticed a seat without windows in the forward J cabin. I don't think that's accurate.

Probably not fully true - it has one window in line with the leg rest, but nothing right beside the seat back.
I saw it in a review on Business or Executive traveller

My experiences over the last year or so is that WP are often among the first asked for their preference irrespective of where in the 787 Business cabin they are. Of course YMMV.

Other than that I prefer bulkhead (Row 1 or 10) as there is more foot room.

This seat map is pretty accurate and very much to scale:

My experience too has been WP are asked preferences first and sometimes even served first. However, generally asked first is still usually served in order of rows.

Row 5 is definitely missing one of the windows so that could be a factor.

3A /K are great seats imo. Recently flew row 3 to DFW and no issues even with a bunch of kids in the cabin.

If it were me I'd go row 3 just for the window factor BUT it can also depend on the flight itself and if it's a day or night (mostly) flight which can influence. Due to the variable "darkness" of the 787 windows (some QF aircraft are pretty good.. others less so in my experience) that if one has a bunch of hours on the "sunny" side that can be a factor for some.

My favourite on the 787 is still 10K, however you'll have to risk maybe a baby in 10E/F.

The rear J cabin definitely gives a more private feel than the forward cabin, albeit minor W traffic traversing for bathrooms. 11A still up there on my list of preferred seats!

I read that issue too. I think I might do OK; SYD-DFW in 3A will be dark when I need sleep and them coming back YVR-SYD in 3K will hopefully only get light when I start to wake. I'll have the little fancy eye shades anyway so them will get a run anyway.
