Last week I purchased 2 DONE4s thru AA, South Africa.

On one ticket the +++ came in at around A$252 for a fairly simple itinerary:
JNB-CPT(stop)-LHR-BCN(stop)-BCN-MAD-MIA(stop)-LAX(stop)-SYD(stop)-JNB

On the second ticket, the +++ came in at around A$765, for the following:
JNB-CPT(stop)-LHR-BCN(stop)-PAR(stop)-LHR(stop)-JFK(stop)-LAX-SYD(Stop)-JNB

I was expecting the second ticket to be a bit higher due to the stop in LHR - around $170 for that stop I think. But the difference is about $500, which I can't work out. I'm not very good at reading the e-ticket coupon, so can anyone else shed some light on this:

I believe that AA introduced some fuel surcharges on Atlantic flights, but can't be totally sure. The YQ at 287 tends to imply that.

Plus, the ex-LHR Higher cabin surcharge would perhaps make up the total.

My head spins trying to read the surcharge lines of the fare though.

All very confusing, might just ask the local Cape Town agent to have a quick look at it. If not, then at least it is still less than what it would have likely been if purchased thru QF.

I priced an AONE5 ex-JNB through AA and the taxes came to over $1200 AUD!!

Please don't let it be that AA are finally charging fuel fines!!

They do have some it appears. Trans ocean flights have it... but depending on where you AONE5 was going the charges for some airports like LHR can be expensive.
If you want F then SA is a great location still, if your more happy with D and you have no need to visit Africa then the ex Asia option is also not so badly priced.

$USD 6700-7100 from Korea, Indonesia, Philippines etc is still not a bad price. Especially since its often cheaper to get to those locations to start, JNB is always expensive to get to. (Unless you use points)

CGK an AONE4 is USD $9370 which is not a lot different from an AONE5 from JNB at $9100 and you would pay less to get there in most cases.

Yep, seems as if they are charging fuel fines transatlantic.

Just heard back from the agent, AA from LHR-JFK came in at ZAR 1948, or around A$275. That seems a lot!! Had I of known it in advance, I would have booked LHR-MAD-JFK on Iberia, and saved $550 on the 2 tickets... live & learn....

They've been charging transoceanic fuel surcharges for a fair while now. However i think the ZAR1948 is for both transatlantic and transpacific segments since you're also ticketed on AA for the transpacific. They'd lump all YQ fines together.

A$275 sounds a tad higher than the YQ I've paid for my DONE4s though. An ex-NRT one ticketed last year with both LHR-LAX and JFK-SYD on AA had YQ of JPY20900, whilst an ex-MNL itinerary ticketed in April this year with LHR-LAX and JFK-NRT on AA was charged YQ of USD200. Both figures convert to approximately A$209.

I'd tend to agree that the Fuel Fines seem a little high. I ticketed mine last week and the fuel fines were $174 in the initial quote and ended up being $87.50 in the final ticket. (though I suspect the final ticket is a tax calc error) As I understand it, AA charge the fuel surcharge on the transpacific and transatlantic sectors regarless of whose metal you fly on. (though this may be wrong) So I'm not sure whether you would have saved any money by routing with Iberia.

The increase in taxes for Europe is pretty standard and the unfortunate case of flying premium classes ex. UK. :(

The AA agent said that " travelling on AA from LHR - JFK (this incurs a fuel surcharge of ZAR1948.00)" zar1948 is about A$275

She could be wrong, but it adds up. A similar ticket I purchased 2 days earlier, major differences being no London stopover, one less European sector, and IB from MAD to MIA instead of AA from LHR to JFK, and the +++ on that ticket was over $500 less.

The AAgent is wrong then because the YQ line is the sum of all YQ charges levied on your ticket, which would include the LAX-SYD flight.

And is that only for long haul - ie outside Europe?

The air passenger duty has risen to:
  • Economy class flights in Europe, internal UK flights - £10
  • Business and first class flights in Europe - £20
  • Economy class long-haul flights - £40
  • Business and first class long-haul flights - £80

The premium one hits any cabin that is not the lowest class of service on any aircraft. So this would include premium economy on airlines like BA and QF. On the contrary fly an all-business class flight (eg the now defunct Silverjet) and you'd only pay the lower amount as there is no higher class of service on the aircraft.
