Greetings,

Based in Perth and travel to Brissy on a fairly regular basis with the boss stumping up for J class thank goodness.

Usually have either a 737 or 767 neither of which could be described as luxurious!

Coming back via Sydney (in J) this time and noticed that the plane is a 747-300.

Am I in for a pleasant surprise or is it much of a muchness? If better any preferences for seating that I should be aware of.

Regards

The 747 will be configured with the old international business class (Dreamtime) seats and has the 12-18 channel individual video including Flight Map and a 50" pitch. Much nicer than the 737s and domestic configured 767s

Definitely would not describe it as much of a muchness. You should find the 747 to be a cut above the others.

Don't get too excited about the 747-300.

It's really mutton dressed up as lamb. Each time I've been in J on this bird I've copped a lapful of water from the dripping condenser in the air conditioning equipment.

I have flown both routes recently and experienced the seats. I must say as a larger passanger I can't stand the dreamtime seats as the armrest sit lower which results in the table sitting on your lap and not the other side of the seat. Now as the well conversed here would realise that means because I have fat thighs the table sits on the piss and my food an drink ends up on the floor and not in my mouth. This problem could be self serving in that if it doesn't end up in my mouth, I might loose some weight then table will sit flat allowing me to once again eat and put the table on the piss. However this all assumes I dont frequent the HJ's in Sydney.

I know I'll be seeing Jenny when I have to use the seat belt extension
until then the Millenium seats on the 737 and 747 are my preference (when the lower back support bladder switch is working?.

For the majority of people, I would say that the Dreamtime seats on all 743's are better than the millenium seats of Domestic configured 767's and 737's. (or 332's)

The domestic configuration has main screen entertainment. i.e. Video entertainment either from ceiling/bulkhead mounted TV's or projected onto bulkhead screens. Everyone has two choices of programming, and that is to either watch it or not watch it.

The 743 J dreamtime seats have personal TV's from which you have a choice of up to 18 video programs as posted earlier by Dave Noble.

Thank you all for taking the time to pass on your knowledge & views.

I've also heard that QF have some sort of convertible seat in some 737's instead of a real business class seat. Has anyone flown on them - or know much about them?

All the 737-800s have the Millennium seats. The 737-400s have convertible seats. I find these seats to be quite comfortable for short-haul business class travel. They are better than the BA convertible seats, especially since BA end up with a 5 across config.

You mention that all 737-800's have the Millennium seats and the 737-400's have convertible seats ... do all 400's have convertible seats, and what's the config?

Yes, that is correct. The -400s all have 5 rows of convertible seats, hence they have variable configurations as far as J/Y seat numbers are concerned.

They used to have two rows of fixed 2x2 seats (the old F seats from days long gone). However, I believe they now all have 5 rows of convertible J/Y seats, but its been a while since I was on a 734.

Yup, that's the go. Most frequent config has rows 4&5 as WHY; often good to snaffle one as you get those extra few J class inches of space.
