747 coming to the rescue of A380 technical issues

I am sure if you look over the threads over the last couple of months, you will find there was a maintenance mishap with one of the A380's.

This means QF have been down one superjumbo, so much less slack within the fleet.

However there are other A380 tech issues requiring B747 subs.

That's because because they have one less A380 compared to what would optimally operate with. The greater utilization of the fleet has left them with very little slack.

Perhaps however there seems to be less B747 tech issues

Is a "new" aircraft - teething problems are the norm.

Maybe you could do an analysis comparing what proportion of service time was lost in the first 5 years due to tech issues from when the B747 first became operational to the same for the A388.

In the case mentioned upthread this aircraft was apparently out of service, not because of an operational tech issue but due to an accident in a maintenance hangar that caused severe and very expensive damage.

This is in addition to the A380 aircraft that are out on scheduled maintenance.

This is why QF needs the 748!

Lol... Not happening.

Although if you want to try one, Lufthansa tickets with QF to Europe and flies this magical bird HKG-FRA daily (until it's permanently subbed with an A380 late October).

Assuming you're in the front eight seats it's probably the most civilised way to get to Europe. Although, if you're any further back, I'd stay with the usual suspects ;-)

What planet are you on? 748 is last millennium technology. 77X will be their 380 replacement, I'll bet we'll see an order in the next couple of years.

I've only flown in the A380 once, in economy on Emirates from Dubai to Melbourne. I was expecting great things but was very disappointed.

This is what happened.
1. My seat wouldn't lock in the upright position - making it difficult to balance against it when trying to get up and out of the seat. The crew did nothing about it.
2. My entertainment system control wouldn't work properly, it was very difficult to get any program I wanted.
3. While the cabin crews work like well oiled machines in their other planes, in the A380 they seemed like amateurs. Food was delivered, but drinks to go with the food came when the food was nearly finished, not just after commencement of eating.
4. They only give out lousy 150ml cans of soft drink to soft drink drinkers (vs 300ml bottles of beer to beer drinkers), and I was thirsty after leaving Dubai. I asked for an extra can of soft drink, and never got one.

I complained about this to Emirates.
They gave me 10,000 extra Skyward Miles.
Regards,
Renato

None of that has anything to do with the A380 itself, but does not reflect well on Emirates.

This was nearly two years ago, when the plane was pretty new.
Stuffed seat and stuffed remote control/entertainment system doesn't inspire confidence in the quality of the parts used for them - what about in the rest of the plane?

Renato

Neither of which Airbus build or have any control over

Whilst we all expect decent service on a plane in all cabin classes, the problem with Economy class is that the ratio of FAs to pax is 1:50. That ratio is far worse than any café or restaurant that I know of.

Why do the cabin crew insist that the seats be locked in the upright position for take-off and landing? Presumably as a safety measure.

Airbus don't have any control over the seats that go into their planes? Or the entertainment system? Really?
They'd have to be the Prime Contractor to Emirates, and would bear responsibility for faults in the plane. they couldn't tell the purchaser to go complain to the subcontractor who has no contract with Emirates.

Renato

They pull it off without a hitch in their other plane types, just as other cabin crews do in most other airlines I've flown.

Airlines have full choice and control over IFE and seating on the aircraft, hence it's not necessarily an Airbus problem.

On other aircraft the ratio is nowhere near 1 crew :50 pax...

I suppose that's part of the logic behind the self service snack bars
