1/ LAX-SYD - A380 Y - 32A

2/ LAX-BNE - 744 J - 5J

3/ LAX-BNE - 744 J - 14K


So - if you go J - would you choose 5B/J or 14A/K (I know it's been discussed but looking for recent 1st hand feedback)?

And given the choice between 32A on the 380 or J on 744 - would you spring for the extra? Or save the miles and be happy enough in 32A?

No seat in Y is as good as the worst seat in J :!:

5 or 14 is really a personal preference.

If it's in the direction LAX/BNE or SYD I would just stick with whY on the A380 as you'll probably spend quite a few hours sleeping. When I flew to the US recently I was in J on QF15 but didn't sleep because I was too preoccupied with the IFE & saving songs to my playlist etc. In that direction it's really daytime according to your bodyclock so therefore you are more likely to maximise the use all the J benefits on offer.

Coming back on QF12 on the A380 in whY as it's late at night, it's bedtime according to your bodyclock so most pax go to sleep fairly soon after dinner which is served pretty much straight after the flight levels off post departure. In my case I slept for about 6 hours & was in the last row or whY (86K) so had no recline 'guilt' as nobody behind me!

If you happen to depart LAX on a Tue night you can always take QF19 back to BNE thereby clearing customs there which leaves more time in transit in SYD to enjoy the F Lounge.

How many SC's do I "need"?

Budget?

Timing?

I won't say anything bad about the premium cabins because they truly are excellent, however 80A/80K/71D (and what I hear of upstairs) is a great way to fly in Economy and if you're paying something like $1300 return and getting a seat like that....well I'd think long & hard before burning points/cash on the premium cabins.

If you were that adamant about travelling in J you would've snapped up the seat without even posing the question.

It so happens I am looking to depart on a Tues night.....ooh hmmm Interesting

However I'll probably be coming from YYZ-LAX-BNE/SYD-CNS so I suspect that I will run into some AAward issues (mileage limits/routing etc) if I try and be too smart

OBB both options would be an AAward - so no SC earn.

Departure will be either SFO or YYZ and therefore will have at least 1 flight each side of the pond in addition to the transpacific sector (so benefit of J is actually over 3 flights).

I can easily justify J..... but a good seat (albeit in whY) on the A380 is a big asset IMHO......

I sat in 5J SYD-LAX in Oct, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Loved the space and box next to me to store goodies. Also loved chatting to the FA during takeoff and landing who sat opposite me. Luckily he was working in the J cabin and spotted my fondness for red.

If you are travelling solo, go for 5 B/J I flew 5B and was very impressed with these seats, the storage space and the space itself.

The new reconfiguration has 14 First suites, 64 fully-flat Skybeds, 35 Premium Economy seats and 371 Economy seats, a total of 484. To do this, we've changed the cabin layout and mix, introducing a new Economy zone of 30 seats on the Upper deck. You will continue to enjoy our A380 flying experience, including our award-winning seats, state-of-the-art Panasonic eX2 Inflight Entertainment system on large personal touch screens and self-service snack bars.

All 12 Qantas A380 aircraft will be reconfigured. The first reconfigured aircraft (registration VH-OQD) entered service on 20 June 2012, with all aircraft completed by April 2013.

I travelled in 71D from MEL-LAX-MEL a few months ago. For mine, you can't beat this for value when booked on sale. I can handle this journey in a good seat in Y, as long as I have the legroom (6'5). I'm personally saving my points for JASAs for my wife and I to europe. The trip to London takes so much more out of me than the trip to the west coast of the US.

However I'd never redeem QFF points for an economy flight, you just don't get your money's worth when paying for the taxes & levies. I'd be more likely to pay the whole fare myself.

I am more likely to do it the other way, as I have a lot of trouble sleeping on a plane, I would fly Australia to the US in Y, as its the start of my trip. the trip coming back is longer and I would have trouble sleeping so would like a J seat to get some sleep.

I think doing shift work ie working weird hours makes it easier to sleep on call. I've been told that I could sleep on a barbed wire fence but I think that's a tad extreme!

Having those flexible winglet things on the side of your headrest is good as it stops your head rolling sideways & I find it really comfortable.

Also I wasn't too fussed about not sleeping BNE/LAX as we were staying at the Sheration Four Points at LAX & had the 24/24 stay prearranged which was immediate checkin then 24 hour stay from that time.

Had a good 6 hours sleep before waking up mid arvo feelingbrand new & driving to Santa Monica where we had dinner.

If you want to sleep uninterrupted then the K seat over the J seat.

If you want to interrupts one others sleep then the K seat over the J seat.

14K would be my choice.

Well I solved my problem in the best possible way..... No need to have to choose between Premium Cabin OR A380.....

A380 F opened up - the solution presents itself......
