The Qantas Health Insurance 10-Day Frenzy is on now. You could earn huge rewards with your health insurance; up to 150,000 Qantas Points* AND for the first time ever 50 bonus Status Credits.^ Hurry, make the switch by 30 November - and let the travel planning begin.

All policies earn Qantas Points, to earn the maximum points, you must purchase Gold Hospital and Top Extras cover for a Couple, Single Parent or Family. Not available to customers with an existing health insurance policy issued by, or on behalf of nib.*

* Qantas Frequent Flyer members who purchase a Qantas Health Insurance policy between 21 November and 11:59pm AEDT 30 November 2020 will earn up to 150,000 sign on Qantas Points. During this time the maximum number of sign on Qantas Points that can be earned upon purchase of combined Gold Hospital and Top Extras Cover is 150,000 for Couples, Single Parents or Families. Each Qantas Health Insurance policy has a maximum number of points that can be earned upon purchase, which can be found here. Points will only be awarded to the primary policyholder after the policy has been held for 60 continuous days and will be based on the level of cover held at that time. Not available to customers who have held a health insurance policy with Qantas, nib, AAMI, Apia, GU Health or Suncorp at any time in the 6 months before purchasing a new Qantas Health Insurance policy. Qantas may withdraw or extend this offer at any time.

^ Qantas Frequent Flyer members who purchase a Qantas Health Insurance policy between 21 November and 11:59pm AEDT 30 November 2020 will earn 50 Status Credits. Bonus Status Credits will only be awarded to the primary policyholder after the policy has been held for 60 continuous days. Not available to customers who have held a health insurance policy with Qantas, nib, AAMI, Apia, GU Health or Suncorp at any time in the 6 months before purchasing a new Qantas Health Insurance policy. Bonus Status Credits will not contribute towards any Loyalty Bonuses, any Platinum or Platinum One Bonus Rewards, or any Qantas Status Accelerator. Status Credits are not transferable and governed by the Qantas Frequent Flyer Program Terms and Conditions.

The lowest extras-only policy for me looks to be around $38/month, so either $72 or $110 for 50 SC depending on how soon one can cancel. Not a bad option if trying to retain with minimal flying.

The exclusions for holding policies with some competitors are interesting, but I guess they're all underwritten by the same insurer.

Well this now seems a bit pointless given today's status extension announcement, but if anyone's still considering applying for the promo, the 50 SC will carry across to 2022 retain targets within the 40% cap.

Cheap way to level up or grab a few LTSCs, I guess. Potential < $2 per SC without flying would have been a hell of a deal 12 months ago 🤣

I notice that they mention "Bonus" - Don't think Bonus are eligible for roll over but it makes a comments about being learnt from partners.

Fair point. The two sentences directly contradict each other:

Which Status Credits count towards the rollover?
Status credits earned through flying or with our partners on the ground will count towards the rollover. Status Credits provided by Qantas as a bonus, support or gift will not count towards the rollover.

If "bonus" SC don't count, then which partners on the ground are Qantas referring to? I've gone through the ANZ, NAB, QF Money, Red, Qantas Hotels, and BP status credit deals over the past 6 months, and every single one was advertised with the words "bonus status credits"....

I suspect it is this part that matters:

Status Credits provided by Qantas as a bonus, support or gift will not count towards the rollover.

However in the great tradition of obscure Qantas T&Cs I suspect we will only know for sure when we find out next year

That provides some clarity for the likes of NAB, ANZ, Red and BP, but equally casts more doubt on SC from Qantas Hotels, Qantas Health Insurance and Qantas Money. 😂

Despite the very poor wording I suspect all SC earned from ground activity will in fact be rolled over, and the "bonus SC" referred to in that Q&A are from DSC/50% bonus SC promos and loyalty bonuses.

The T&Cs of the email sent out to members seems to be better worded:

Only Status Credits earned through flying and on the ground offers are eligible for the rollover. Status Credits earned from any Loyalty Bonus, Platinum Bonus Reward and any gifted Status Credits (including Status Credit Boost and Status Credit Support) are ineligible for the rollover
I think only the SC already accrued from PointsPlusClub rollover are ambiguous.

Whether the SC will roll over or not, the temptation got too much for me! Changed my health insurance to QF at the highest level for the 150k points and 50 SC. After I get the points I will either change my cover to reduce premiums, or go back to my previous insurer.

I look at it this way: with my old insurer I was at Silver+ level without extras for $274 p.m. Now with QF Gold & Top Extras for $499. Over three months it will cost me $675 more for 150k points. 0.45 c per point looks like good value to me. We will also be able to use the extras cover to claim some money back on dentist bills for check-ups due in February, making it even cheaper!

So anything underwritten by nib 😬 that's unfortunate - it covers quite a large chunk of policies out there. The commission Qantas gets from nib mustn't be as large if the new member is already insured by one of the various nib underwritten policies in the market, hence no SC's.

That seems like a reasonable price to pay for a QFF point IMO. Just to confirm, going by your calcs, the minimum period to hold the policy is three months? Is that long enough to be considered a 'new customer' at your previous insurer (to capture any bonus offered on the way back too :))?

One piece of advice here, for anyone considering switching health insurance provider; check that the insurer will waive the waiting period. It's pretty common, but safer to check.

Going from your provider to Qantas Insurance looks fine, as written on the Qantas health website:
"Waiting periods already served for comparable services will be recognised"

If you plan to go back in the other direction after a few months, might be good to check already.

I may drop QF cover to Silver+ level without extras at the 3 months mark (only $3 p.m. more expensive than my previous insurer) and wait for a promotion by my old fund for which there may be an exclusion period. They have run "get one month free" type promotions before. Or there may be new offers by other insurers. It's a bit like churning credit cards.

I thought health funds were legally required to honour waiting periods served with other insurers. No one in their right mind would change insurers if they had to re-serve waiting periods. That would stifle competition. I'll check anyway.

I have in the past switched to qantas health on the cheapest hospital and extras cover then changed to the most expensive cover around day 56 and received the maximum bonus points. It's based on your level of cover at day 60. After getting the points (day 62 or so) I utilised the cooling off period to revert my cover to the cheapest level and received a refund.

You really worked out how to get the best value!
Now I will have to remember that for next time.
