Gold status attained in early January

I would think carefully about United though. Very hard to use their points if you don't have their credit card

Why so ? Can use them for Thai airways ? What is the need for the credit card ?

I think the credit card opens up their award inventory in business class (for travel on united). But I thought gold did that as well? (Maybe not?)
