Dear grounded friends

I just saw a deal on Qantas Wine. you can trade 30K QFF points for wine (there is some good discount) and get a bonus of 20 SCs. As an example, you can get a case of Spinifex for 30K QFF points. The market value is about 330$, not a good value but would be similar to a cash conversion from Everyday Reward. The 20 bonus SCs is the bait here.

is this a good deal?

Cheers

I guess it depends if you need status credits and/or wine?

If you're in Points Club, you can spend 18,400 points + some taxes to get 36 status credits by flying MEL-SYD-CBR in J, as an example.
That’s a good way of looking at it.

I got the offer also but being a SYD based PC member unfortunately *all* flying is currently grounded for me ☹️. I’ll take a closer look at what’s on offer…

So around 511 points (plus taxes) per SC for the points club member v 1500 points per SC for the wine offer.

Presumably the SCs count for lifetime status (can't see anything to the contrary in the T & Cs).

There is a 5% / 10% discount that applies automatically to Points club / Points plus club for the wine. Those members would need to buy multiple cases, or take the 35k offer, so their discounted total spend remains above 30k, in order to get the 20SC

Is this a publicly available deal? Could you please link to it so I can read the T&C?

Edit: Found on the Qantas Wine site after I logged in. Fathers Day sorted.

^Offer is valid for a limited time. You must spend 30,000 points or more on applicable product(s) to be eligible for 20 Status credits. Status credits will not be applied to purchases under 30,000 Qantas Points, purchases made with cash or returned or cancelled orders. Any purchase over 30,000 Qantas Points will only be eligible for 20 Status Credits in total. A maximum of 20 Status Credits apply per customer. Status Credits earned for each purchase will be awarded within 14 days of the promotion end date. Status Credits will be reviewed 90 days after the end of the campaign and in the event of product returns or cancellations, Status Credits will be deducted. Status Credits cannot be transferred.

I have plenty of points but could do with more SC to go towards my lifetime total.

Using points to earn SC from rewards flights is a much better deal, but as I'm based in Europe unfortunately this is not an option for me.

I think Qantas Wine will only deliver to Australia, but I must look at this offer in a bit more detail to see if it is possible for me to order wine to be delivered to a friend in Australia, and still earn the SC.

In the current circumstances where flying is reduced and SC are therefore harder to come by I would happily exchange 30000 points for 20 SC, even without the wine!

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Similar train of thought here, but also using points purely to earn SC is rather time consuming.

You absolutely can send it to another address. I can't say whether nominating a different name on the order would cause issues but you could just address it to yourself at your friend's address and let them know to expect a surprise once it has shipped? :)

I can't quite reconcile that exchange rate for just the SC, but together with the wine I thought it was decent value for a gift I had otherwise budgeted ~$200 for. The Lindemans Trio Premium half dozen comes down to 31k after PC+ discount and 500 points earned on the transaction.

I think you're confusing the 5% PC discount for the rewards store. I don't believe this applies to QF wine unfortunately.

Looking at this objectively - it's not the greatest bang for buck for 30K points but let's say you burn 30K on slightly below point value wine that you would have ordered anyway, you're only paying the difference between that rate (lets say 0.8c which seems to be roughly the going rate for qantas wine - maybe closer to 0.77c but there are some specials as well actually this is not true, its all over the place, I get anything from 0.5 to 0.85 for most products, avoid bonus points offers by the looks of things as their value seems to be the worst, just bring your calculator and look for 0.77c and above as decent value comparitively) and a nominal acquisition value (I use 1.1c) for those 20SCs.

So... if 30K of points nets you $240 of wine and 1.1c is a nominal value you agree with, you've spent $90 on 20SC or $4.50 per SC. Given my dearth of other opportunities and the need for LTSC, it works for me.

Also the products appear to have to be marked as eligible for this offer so now I really don't know what's good or bad value anymore... look for this:

So what is the best bang for buck on the QF wine store available under this deal?

All the eligible options are in one place:

This one is 1.68c in value per point

1.5c for this

But really I'd only buy anything I actually wanted to drink, not just for the SCs.

I've nabbed this deal for my partner as she is PS on 440 SC, trying to get to SG with an anniversary date of January. Based in Melbourne and not expecting to fly again until December, it's going to be touch and go unless we take advantage of on the ground SC (15 SC for vax and 50 SC for BP still to come).
She's PCP and gets 500k points a year through her work so a no brainer for exchanging a few points for some SC.
Also, an observation for those with linked ABNs, your business still gets the business rewards points even though the wine was purchased with points!

It appears that there are other eligible products but for some reason are not showing up on that page. Example below:

Actually appears that Qantas are adding more products since my last post as I can now see hampers in the list.

Agree more and different products have been added during the day. After I ordered a case of status-credit-eligible chardonnay early this morning, I went back shortly after to screenshot for a friend and the item was already sold out!

Searched to see what else might be suitable and on return a different case of chardonnay (same points) showing so maybe it's an opportunity to progressively clear out "bin-ends" and/or excess stock? Also kicking myself I was too slow off the mark for the Glenmorangie :(

Anyway, might have to "gift" MrLat34 20SCs

The T & Cs state that the bonus status credits will be awarded within 14 days; anyone received theirs already?

I just picked up a 6-pack of the 2018 Leconfield cabernet and the 2019 Vasse Felix Filius cabernet for 31.5k points after Points Club Plus 10% discount. I'd probably be prepared to purchase these for $20-25/btl each, so the wine is valued between $240-$300 for me (probably at the lower end).

It's definitely not the best use of points, but with my balance ballooning over the last few years due to a number of credit card sign-on bonuses, its a no-brainer for me.
