Still can't work out what business can afford to get rid of 5000 staff. What kind of management let's it get to that level?

We don't run our business with 1 extra staff let alone 5000!

Has anybody ever accused this CEO and Board of knowing how to run a business?

It's easy to kick an airline while it's down but perhaps today it should be admitted that QF has survived a decade in which most of the American industry filed for bankruptcy and a few European majors joined them. Meanwhile QF pays interest on time, will continue to employ 27,000 staff and takes us on joyrides locally and overseas which have all been return trips. I feel more than a little sorry for shareholders (as I always do as an ex-stockbroker) but then the federal Government is the organisation that collected the sale proceeds at $2 per share. Next time we're all enjoying drinks in a QF lounge we should think a bit more postive!

Ben Sandilands: "Qantas frequent flyer loyalty underlying profit is $146 million, a record result and $9 million better than previous corresponding half."
Well we all contributed to that, so I'll raise a glass of EpiQure red tonight, safe in the knowledge that I did my bit :D

A message from CEO Qantas Loyalty, Lesley Grant
Dear serfty,
Today Qantas announced a range of measures to take $2 billion in costs out of the business over three years, including through deferring and selling aircraft, and significant job reductions.
I have received many questions both directly and through social media and wanted to reach out to you personally as a valued member.
These are tough but necessary measures to ensure a strong future for Qantas and our nearly 10 million Qantas Frequent Flyer members.
Let me assure you, however, that these measures will not impact your Qantas Points balance or cause your Qantas Points to expire.

This year, Qantas has many plans to keep on rewarding Qantas Frequent Flyer members. Here are just a few I wanted to share with you:
We will continue to introduce more everyday ways to earn and redeem Qantas Points.
On 31 March 2014, we will launch our new business loyalty program, Aquire. Australian-based small and medium businesses could earn Aquire Points through their everyday transactions, including travel, and convert them into Qantas Points in the name of an individual Qantas Frequent Flyer member.
We will continue to introduce new features and benefits to Qantas Cash, with more than 200,000 members using the prepaid facility already.
We are opening new stylish Lounges. The Qantas Hong Kong Lounge will open in March 2014. The new Los Angeles Business Lounge will open in April 2014, with a new world class Qantas First Lounge to open in Los Angeles in the second half of 2014.
whitespacer.jpg
The upgrade of our Airbus A330 fleet is progressing well, with the aircraft featuring new Business fully flat beds and the latest Panasonic entertainment system to feature on our domestic and international network from late 2014.
whitespacer.jpg
We will be introducing new member communities, in addition to our food and wine community Qantas epiQure, which will provide opportunities for members to be engaged with the things we know you are passionate about.

Qantas is changing, but what will never change is our commitment to rewarding you for your loyalty, whether on the ground, or in the air.

She probably feels one of the safest with her division nicely profitable.

Yep, me. Most of their decisions seem pretty much spot on, though some of Jetstar's Asian plays may be mistakes. Their main problem has been that they have poor PR and haven't carried many of the staff and QFF members with them.

Arriving back into MEL at about 21:30 is fine if MEL is your final destination. What about those continuing onto ADL, CBR, HBA, BNE and other destinations when they want to fly QF metal.

Doesn't worry me, I will happily overnight at the Airport hotel and fly out next morning.

Is it me or is David Flynn's article in the SMH / Age incorrect about the retired 747s? My understanding is that the ER version has been refurbed and kept and the ones being removed from service were Skybed MKI for example

Any news on SYD-NRT? I've got bookings in J on QF21 for next January - clearly hoping I'll be riding an A380 up there instead !

Joyce:

  • Average fleet age of 7.7 years
  • Consolidated engineering bases from three to one
  • We've sold non-core assets
  • Over the past five years no company has worked harder to deal with these new economic realities
  • Improvement in our customer service [achieved]
  • Our tie-up with EK has been overwhelmingly positive and our customers love it
  • In the circumstances we face, all of this is not nearly enough
  • Qantas can compete in any fair fight
  • We've been able to compete with one hand tied behind our back with the Qantas Sale Act [really?]
Can he really be sure in that achievement - they can't even get PB right. That WOULD be customer service improvement (but only up to the standards it should be now). FAIL

Does anyone know when Perth to Singapore flights will cease? I've got classic J awards booked for my family in late August. Now have some Singapore flights wait listed in case.

Joyce:

  • We'll be working with our employees to manage [the job losses] in a compassionate way
  • Today our focus in on transforming our cost base for earnings recovery
  • Qantas has valuable and desirable assets across our diversified portfolio
  • Sale of BNE lease to be recognised in second half of financial year
  • No other decisions made on capital (eg. leases, buildings)
  • Our customers are at the heart of what we do [just not in Darwin, Adelaide, Hobart or Canberra]
  • We'll continue our A380 reconfiguration project
  • Wonderful new lounges will open up over the next few months in HKG and LAX to complement the success of our SIN lounge
  • We'll continue to strengthen QF loyalty for our customers
  • Qantas will remain a top tier international carrier
[My bolding]
You forgot PER

Finally, EpiQure is coming back with more bonus points.
