Well the Pell case has thrown up an unexpected problem for Bill Shorten but I doubt we will hear of it from the media.

Michael Smith does hold a grudge against the ALP as Julia Gillard had him sacked from his radio job.But this statement coming from a former head of the National Crime Authority does not belong in the fake news category.

Just goes to show how protected you are if you're left-wing enough to be part of the establishment elite these days. Footballers are prevented from playing as soon as a complaint is made, but a guy can still run for PM.

A bit sad/downhearted that we see stories like this on the AFF site. Not really much to do with planes, trains, hotels and lounges but i suppose a few days out from an election and its in the playground. But one of the comments Smith story was not even News Corp would touch it, so why do we?

Are they? And we wonder why the US got themselves in knots over false stories at their last election.

I reflect back to last week whilst i was in LA and with a bit of time to spare before heading to Asia i went birding down at Bellona Lagoon. Met a lady walking around there as should get outside today as there was no chemtrails! A wonderful story all about it, down the the fact that under the microscope her blood has "wires" in it from the aluminium particles from them. Great stories and someone will believe them.........

2GB has apparently referred to the statement but not much media coverage so far. The Shorten protection racket continues.

Funny watching all those who shrieked loudest about the accusations against Brett Kavanaugh and George Pell are so desperate to bury this story.

If anyone wants to escape the vacuous chattering of the Alt-Right and Communists, I can heartily recommend a trip to South America. Pity I came back a few days too soon, but that's ScuMo's fault .... not mine.

I'm betting on a minority government, as that was the last time we had a functioning parliament.

I agree. I’d go on to say that the whole subject of this thread of politics is unnecessary, inappropriate and divisive. It rarely has anything to do with travel.

Noel Pearson so eloquently said in his eulogy to Whitlam; " The devil-may-care attitude to management as opposed to reform is unlikely to be seen again by governments whose priorities are to retain power rather than reform" has never rang so true in this election. With that I expect disciples from either side to correct me on the Whitlam era ad nauseam. But to point of the thread is not clear; we usually talk the best route, complain about Y boarding before J, SA better than OW, helping with the best deals, all objectively. In this threat its either you're black or white no grey, hatred for one leader or the other and the lines are drawn.

Like airlines, you cannot tell me one airline/read party has every feature better than the others, therefore superior, but here it seems that everything Labor or Liberal or others do is bad (or great depending on the writer). Objectivity is lost, which i have always felt has been a strength when we help our fellow travellers and recite our stories. I for one will see this site a little bit more differently going forward.

Well it could.

I saw an infographic that showed where the two major Leaders had travelled
The seats shaping the election and it shows the leaders visits

Peak Pork

So a national election is a travel roadshow. Imagine the FF points racked up...

I think this has been discussed upthread, but I think in the playground it's fine. No one is forcing you to read it, I ignore probably 70-80% of AFF threads. The main reason I read and actually enjoy it is 1) for amusement, I like actually trying to guess reactions from specific contributors 2) It tends (but is not always) more civilised than most places where politics is discussed a and 3) it reflects the diverse nature of the interests of the AFF community, and 4) you also get to learn a bit about the bare naked propaganda that is out there.

What I can't stand is where those politics, and the associated propaganda, are woven into other threads (outside of the playground). Although mods do act on those promptly and part of the reason for that happening is large companies (including those in the travel industry) taking stands on social issues - and that can be a bit like a red rag to a bull.

I think that saying that no one is forcing me to read it stating the bleeding obvious. I feel the thread is divisive. Perhaps I’m just sensitive.

Perhaps I’m just sensitive.

I will admit, there seems to be more propaganda entering this thread in recent days than constructive debate. Sad.

But, don't worry, this thread should be all over within a week (we all hope!). We can get back to the usual divisive business of disagreeing about how great QF are, and how wonderful Neil Perry catering is or isn't :p

CE you may get to notice the new Treasurer is an idiot if that happens. He thinks negative equity in homes will be tolerated by our banks. Tell that to the folks in north west of Western Australia where home values tanked.

Don't shoot the messenger mate - I was just reporting Sportsbet's activities. I am A Political - Sunday morn with Sco Mo or Billy Babe as PM my life will go on - maybe others will experience similar?

Yes I know it is likely to happen in the House of Reps. The Senate may give us a few years of stalemate.

Ah. But Bill says they aren't tax increases, just removing a gift, or reversing future changes...
(Cough cough).

On the dividend imputation, I do in some way agree with the principle of not giving a refund where someone has a marginal tax rate of 0%

Very hypothetical example:
Consider Company ABC which made 100 million dollars, paid 30 million dollars in tax and decided to distribute all 70 million in dividends.

Now let's say they have 10,000 shareholders. All retirees who own their own house and this is their only source of income.

They all declare $7000 of income, and then claim back the $3000 franking credits as a cash refund totaling $30 million (plus no doubt a whole heap of other government benefits)

Thus net result is the government has collected Zero tax from a company that made $100 million.

It's not removal of double taxation for these people, it's removal of taxation for the company entirely.
But why is your scenario any different to giving that same $30 million back to the same 10,000 shareholders who in a parallel universe paid exactly $30 million in PAYE tax. The net result is still a negative $30 million in tax collected, you can argue I suppose whether that comes from the company or the individual but the outcome is still the same

I don’t think so, though some may qualify for a part pension. People don’t have zero income, they have zero or low taxable incomes. For Centrelink all sources of income are assessed not just taxable.
That's actually a very interesting question. If people are not going to get the benefit of the franking credits, are they required to include in regards to entitlement for Centrelink or other benefits. Under current tax law, I would say yes but surely that will need to be amended

But why is your scenario any different to giving

It's very different.
Say the dividends go to a set of taxpayers on $100k, so roughly 30% marginal tax rate.
They basically pay no additional tax on that income (the govt has already collected 30%, so imputation avoids double taxation).
But the government still collects it's $30m - no refunds.

Or alternatively to taxpayers on $250k, say 45% marginal tax rate.
There the government actually collects $30m from the company plus effectively an extra $15m from the taxpayer (after imputation credit).

All very different to the refund scenario where the government ends up with 0.

But why is your scenario any different to giving that same $30 million back to the same 10,000 shareholders who in a parallel universe paid exactly $30 million in PAYE tax. The net result is still a negative $30 million in tax collected, you can argue I suppose whether that comes from the company or the individual but the outcome is still the same
Because if you've paid $30 million in tax, your marginal tax rate isn't 0%, which is less than 30%.
