2 pax on one ticket - one cant make it

I have done this a few times on Qantas :D

The way I see it, I paid for the ticket so its mine to do as I please :!:

Actually what you can do is very limited. You can't resell it, give it away or let anybody but the identified passenger sit in it. And if the airline wants to move you to another seat they can.

I see the argument about it all being the airline's way if something goes wrong for you and wonder if this needs to be changed.

However, if I was desperate to get somewhere and waiting on standby and a pax didn't turn up I would be mightily annoyed if I couldn't get the vacant seat for the reasons discussed above.

Most of us fly enough that it has happened to us that we need to get that very last seat somewhere.

Swings and roundabouts.

Perhaps a 50% refund if informed of a no-show which has to be communicated to the airline a minimum 0f 12 hours notice, this refund could be in the way of a credit to be used for a future flight or frequent flyer points for their loyalty program account...?

At least this way the unfortunate pax gets something, and the airline can re-sell the ticket... :D

with the above the airline still gets a minimum of 1.5x the general ticket price (if they can re-sell), I would also imagine that the airline would exploit the late availability of a seat (if flight heavily booked) and charge a pretty penny for the available seat... possibly a fair deal for everybody...?

What is the probability of a JQ flight being 100% sold out with standby list active?

Post here assume the airline can make money out of us notifying them rather than non show.

I've seen that plenty of times. In fact the siuation really got lively once a fully booked DRW/MEL flight when one hour prior to departure, JQ Ops decided to cap the flight at 156 pax despite 177 seats being sold so they could take on more fuel. Why they don't take freight off before pax I don't know but to deny boarding to the last 21 pax to checkin was not a good look.

Of course there was someone going to a funeral in that last group of 21 & AFP needed to be there for the remainder of checkin.

Have had this happen to me on Jetstar as well... Bit of a coincidence. As my traveling companion couldn't get a refund they just left the ticket.

I checked them in online and selected the seat next to me.

Then it was funny at the airport hearing them paged to go to gate XX as your flight is ready for an immediate departure. Since they were checked in JQ couldn't assign the seat next to me.

So I had a spare seat. Win!

Lets say A ton of fresh barra every week is worth more than riff raft who fly once every two years if I can be allowed to put it in broad form!

Would you still be annoyed if someone on the flight had paid for 2 seats and in reality only needs one seat but simply wanted some extra comfort. So there is actually a spare (vacant) seat and you cannot have it.

Why is that situation any different to me booking a flight for 2 people (myself and my father) and then one cannot make it. The airline will not issue a refund so why wouldn't I try and keep both seats to myself?

I do not feel any guilt at all....
