2-factor login: delay receiving SMS when logging in from home PC

I have 2-factor login enabled on my Qantas account. I enter my login details and pin, then receive an SMS code to verify my login; however, when I login on my home windows 10 PC, the SMS is delayed by up to 6 hours, and am also not required to enter the SMS code to access my account

In contrast, when I login from my iPhone (on my same home wifi connection) moments later, the SMS code is received instantly.

Anyone else had this issue or know what might be going on?

This unfortunately appears to be a fairly common problem; I have experienced it myself several times. It is very intermittent and there seems to be no obvious cause. It also occurs sometimes on other websites using 2FA vis SMS. I have queried the phone company but they plead ignorance.

The Qantas Premier Platinum Card delivers up to 100k Qantas Points, 75 bonus Status Credits, complimentary lounge invitations and travel insurance. All this with a reduced first-year annual fee of $199.

That's why SMS is not acceptable for 2F authentication. The children who make the decision to implement it, have grown up with SMS & ASSUME that it is UNIVERSAL, GUARANTEED, and INSTANTANEOUS. They have no idea that it is NONE of these.

SMS is based on a store and forward. So when you send an SMS it goes to the network provider that stores it, and then forwards it on to the destination phone. This forwarding is done when it can be. So, if the network is busy, it can take time for the message to arrive.

But how does this explain why the message is delayed when the request is sent from a browser vs not from a phone - both are using the same network (ie my NBN provider).

In your first post you say you can log into your account from a PC without a code but then say it takes 6 hours to receive it. Doesn’t make sense.

That said when you log in from a PC it will enforce 2FA the first time, but if your browser accepts cookies and doesn’t clear them when you close or you don’t open an another account from that browser then next time you log in it won’t normally ask for 2FA.

So the real issue is not the delayed sms but why you are getting one at all, in this case.

No, the real issue is the delayed SMS. I want an SMS for 2FA regardless of whether I log in from a browser or phone. Happens instantly from my phone, not from the browser.

I’ve just experienced a significant lag receiving the verification email I need to log into Qantas Business rewards. There is a choice between email or text plus you have to answer a security question.

Ok, let’s go back one step. Is the issue what you want or what you are getting? If what you want then it is simple, clear your cookies after each session then everytime you will he asked for 2FA.

Don’t do that then the system won’t prompt for 2FA from a browser after the first log on, except where the system detects enough of a change in what it is presented to warrant asking for 2FA.

I guess the issue for Qantas is balancing those that want 2FA and those that don’t. When it first came out there were plenty of anti posts that’s for sure.
