No, he'll need to be quicker than that

This will be the day's last over. Clarke's scored a 1000 runs in 2012 at an average of 111.

He'll need to hit 3 consequtive 6's to get there now:
120.3
Steyn to Hussey, no run
120.2
Steyn to Hussey, no run, good length outside off stump, Hussey lets it pass
120.1
Steyn to Hussey, no run, driven on the front foot towards mid off

That's it for the day! Hussey finishes with a 4 - lucky he's on 86 and not 87....

Australia 487/4 (121.0 ov)
Clarke 218 no, Hussey 86no

Current partnership 188 runs, 36.2 overs, RR: 5.17 (Hussey 86, Clarke 98)

Wonder if they know they beat the previous 5th wicket record with that last shot of the day??

Hussey finishes the day with the same number of partnership records as he started, just swapped the fourth for the fifth and he already holds the sixth.

Amla's action makes Murili's arm look as straight as a die. I used to coach an under 14 kid with an action like that. I had to ask the umpires not to no ball him, and that we were going to try to change his action. I reckon Smith was taking the piss.

I followed the updates on Cricinfo and I do not believe it.

Great chance for victory tomorrow.

I think AUST will bat through until tea, then give their bowlers a chance at snaring Smith again - probably LBW ;)

Should be a good day at the cricket today.

I believe Aust will open up the bat a bit today and have a bit of a smash around.

You guys probably know this, but if Pup gates to 300 he becomes the first in history to score two triple hundreds and a double in a calendar year. I think he can do this before lunch with a 30 minute longer session.

Clarke's selflessness is extraordinary. Declaring at 259no, when he was in sight of the history books.

Interesting bet to declare. Seems that Australia are gambling to pull off a win.

It's been a batter's pitch for most part, so unless Australia have a radical attack I can't see this changing the result.

Just got out of a Management meeting that started at 9.30am (I couldn't change it). Just catching up with happenings this morning.

Great to see Hussey get his ton and set a new record with Pup for the 5th wicket.

on cricinfo one of the commentators said this about Pup's declaration:

Smudgeon: "One thing Pup is NOT going to do is play for a personal record. I've been particularly impressed with the way he's played. Last summer, he had the perfect opportunity to play for a record innings, and instead declared with victory foremost on his mind. Our boy's all growed up (sniff)..."

Yes, records are great, but giving his bowlers 78 overs against a mentally and physically tired SA team was too inviting (after spending 138 overs in the field, I'd be tired as well). If we can get a couple of the top order out, that'll mean a lot - as they failed to get many of ours!

Also Pup makes his average better with a not out :D ;)

Yes! what a start:

Australia have begun just how they would have wanted to. Again, South Africa do not have Duminy, so they have only nine wickets. Amla is the new batsman.
1.3
Pattinson to Petersen, OUT, caught behind! And what a loose shot from Petersen. He reached off the front foot for a good length ball that pitched outside off and seamed away from him, Petersen was driving a long way away from his body and nicked it to Wade

What's this? South Africa lost Duminy through injury but they can't replace him with a substitute so they are 1 wicket less in the pocket?

Someone refresh me on the rules, please? (not annoyed, just confused)

I think part of the reason for declaring at the drink break was because the SA team were going to drag out the break as long as possible (walking in slowly, re-lacing shoes etc). So rather than lose another 5-7 mins, declare at that point and get them in with plenty of time for the Aussie bowlers to apply some pressure before lunch.

Correct. A sub can field in a non-specialist position for an injured player, but batsman cannot be replaced. Otherwise there would be all sort of fake injuries happening and swapping out "bunny" batsman for strong batsman in the last innings. Duminy can bat and use a runner if he chooses.

Unlikely to happen, but what if SA is nine down and needs to survive an over? Would Duminy limp out and face up? He wouldn't have to run.
