175 SC left to WP - worth a SC run?

Hi,

I just want to make sure I haven't lost it... I'll be 175 SC off WP come July 31 and getting cold feet about doing my first SC run. Most "cost effective" option is the 200SC SYD-BNE-TSV return for 81,304 pts gross, but that's a lot to me - translates to ~$700...

I generally do one int'l trip a month, so I know it would be a benefit, and the platinum bonus may well cover the points cost anyway.

What do you think, am I just being cheap? :)

Dont forget you can drop the points cost down, and its hard to buy points at the prices they charge! You also need to look at your flying pattern those 8000 points could be recouped quickly in the form of the extra earn on flights longer than 600m. Better seats, F lounge, more luggage, better chance of upgrades.....

Thanks for your replies. I wanted to ask about that actually. I've never understood why people quote "50,000 points + $300" (for example) when looking at ASA's. I did a quick check to see if there was some extra value in not spending as many points, but the difference is marginal.

I have plenty of points (~200K) so that's not a problem.

40000 points can be saved by paying $348, always handy.

Silly question.

Yes, of course. Do it!

Espec with reular INT travel, you will not regret it.

If the OP is based in SYD or MEL I'd say go for it (for the F Lounge alone). If the regular international travel is anywhere but NZ, it's probably worth it for the points bonus increase (and the ever elusive op-up) and of course, when things go 'up the creek' you're going to be better off as a WP than an SG!

Don't forget the 5600 points directly earned for that route as an SG, also the 200 SC's could contribute 40% of a 8000 point loyalty bonus.

Operative word being could, OP would need to get another 100 SC on top of the SC run for that to work by end of Jul.

Actually it's deeper than that, I thought the same, but then considered that maybe rotor has less than 1225 SC's on QF "loyalty eligible' flights - For example, lets say 800-990 in which case the 200 would reach/pass a threshold. ;)

True, thats going to catch a few by surprise end of next month.

Definitely worth if if flying int'l ex-SYD/MEL. Especially given you are obviously flying in whY int'l as well.

Yes I am in SYD. Good point about the loyalty bonus, but I would fall short of the 3rd bonus. Out of the 45 flights for my membership year, only 5 are not ~ flights.

I made a mistake in my first post, I should have said net, not gross, so the points earning was already taken out. Must have been under the influence of the treasury department ;)

Everything that's said before, but also, if flying patterns continue to be the same, you'll be fine for renewal next year at just over 1200SC, so the SC run this year could be a one off for continuing better status and service because of it.

Yes, yes yes yes & yes!

Well I would do it so you get access to the business class lounges, which in MEL/CBR/SYD are far better than the standard lounge. I'd also do it if you fly internationally from MEL/SYD as you get access to the First lounges.

Also you earn more miles on flights :)

Thanks for the encouragement. I've booked it :)

Something that might amuse you - when I was selecting my seat I was confused for a second why I "only" had access to the first few rows of the plane...

I wouldn't think twice about spending ~$700 for 200 SCs.

Platinum for the first time would be good novelty value.

Courtesy of an unplanned spurr of the moment trip to Thailand I didn't need to complete my own status run this month...and made it to Platinum for the first time...well I will when that damned Jetstar points request gets actioned! I strongly thought about continuing my SR to get the 3rd loyalty bonus also for an extra 100SC earned...but sanity and reality crept in :D

The OP has made the logical choice already, but as did everyone else, my encouragement would have been yes do it! anyway....
