I thought it was just a fixed percentage charge as well, but I guess its not that simple as Evan said earlier, they get a fixed charge for large transactions.

Note also that if using an Amex Credit Card (as oppposed to a Charge Card), Amex will not allow a single transaction that exceeds the card's credit limit. That means that if you have, for example a $10,000 credit limit, and even if you pre-pay $20,000 into the card account (which will give you $30,000 available credit) the maximum single transaction permitted is still $10,000. So that $30,000 would need to be processed in at least three separate transactions.

Whilst this is normal practise it is possible to talk to the CC company and get a specific approval for the one transaction. I've done this a few times in the past.

Can't believe I'm going to get on the Amex merry-go-round again as I received their 17500 pts, no first year fee offer in the mail this week. The offer just looks so easy, do 2-3 purchases, collect 17500 pts for free and then cancel the card.

Last year I switched my Amex access to a linked/companion card with my Westpac visa which has been working well. Hopefully taking up this Amex offer will remain seperate and not upset my other "points" activities.

On the subject of the car yard splitting the car purchase across multiple card transactions....I think they need to check their Amex Merchant Agreement. Splitting transactions not allowed.
