10 pts / $ for Qantas Vouchers - Back for Xmas 2014

I just did a dummy booking for a flight SYD-WEL-SYD in early 2015 and came up with business fares at $751 over and $709 return which seemed OK. I proceeded to buy a $1000 gift certificate. I then attempted to buy the same seats on the same days but was offered $939 over and $897 return. The other fares are not offered. I booked over in whY and back in business for a total $1137, so QF missed out on $323 because of their greed. I was intending buying 2 return tickets in PE to Hong Kong using a gift certificate but given the surcharge built into the fares for booking with a certificate I will book with CX and Qantas miss out again. It is easy to switch to BFOD on any other carrier given the contempt with which QF treats its customers. 10 points per dollar and no CC fee cost hundreds of dollars extra from what I can see:mad:.

The offer says:

  • If the full balance of the voucher is not redeemed in one transaction, a new voucher with the same expiry date will be issued for the unused portion of the original voucher, as set out in full terms and conditions.
and the t's and c's say:

  • If the full balance of the voucher is not redeemed in one transaction, a new voucher with the same expiry date will be issued for the unused portion of that voucher. Subsequent vouchers will be sent to the email address supplied for the first adult listed on the voucher. If no email address is supplied for the first adult listed on the voucher, subsequent vouchers will be sent to the email address of the person who purchased the voucher.
There is nothing about small residual balances not being reissued due to administrative inconvenience.

It is the same as buying something in a shop and being told sorry your change is such a small amount we will not bother giving it to you !!

Contact the Office of Fair Trading in your State and ask them to look into it because Qantas know people will not bother chasing up small amounts.

Qantas must be desperate to improve the bottom line when it stoops to such low tactics.

Qantas don't care. Terms and conditions are changed to suit them when convenient.

After calling the premium desk twice and a PM to RedRoo, still nothing.

I would've suggested calling about that, get the CSA to see what price they get. Such a surcharge isn't correct. Were the cheaper fares still available online?

Well I did manage to get $3.99 residuals issued. But then firing off a customer care form is easier than a few phone calls.

I may try that next, although I note $3.99 is more than the $2 cutoff I was advised.

I did call and they did try to tell me the amount was too small. The $2 cut off is definitely for customer care vouchers only, not gift vouchers.

Yes. I did exactly that - a $200 voucher for 2x $99 flights. Even if you lose the $2, you are still up compared to buying a $150 voucher and paying the $48 remainder as normal. That is even if you don't earn bonus points with a QF branded cc.
You are only ahead if you receive the 10 x bonus points for gift vouchers purchased. Outside of bonus promotions a $50 gift voucher does the trick.

During these promotions if you know you need $5000 worth of flights then buy the biggest possible denominations and alternate the use of the gift vouchers so you do not leave a small residual value. That's what I do anyway.

Yeah, I was referring to the topic of this thread with the current 10 points per dollar offer. Even if you have all travel plans for 2015 sorted it may not hurt to bank a few smaller ones about now for 2016 travel (to be booked late 2015).. that is, if you want the 10x points straight away. The cash outlay may be a different story however...

Better hurry up and spend my remaining 2013 vouchers ( 1 x $9 residual and 2 x $500) so I can load up with 2014. Have been reading with interest the challenges that members with low value residual vouchers have been having.

Nice having a travel budget already set for 2015 and the funds available. Makes it easier to load up.

I too have seen previously that a fare available at a low price if paying without vouchers is not available if using vouchers (that was on a domestic SYD-BNE). If anyone else has come across this issue then I'm going to reconsider if it's even worth loading up on these vouchers for planned travel next year.

I had no problem booking sale fares SYD-BNE and vv with no price difference. Are you sure they didn't sell out in the meantime?

This was earlier in the year. It wasn't sold out cos once I saw that the price was higher with voucher, I reverted back to payment by cash and the lower prices returned.

Likewise for my Wellington booking. After I booked using the voucher I ran another dummy booking and up came the cheaper fare. As an experiment I have just now re-run the dummy booking and guess what, the cheaper fare is still offered to me if I am NOT using the voucher.

I am not sure why you want to purchase a few smaller value vouchers for future travel? Purchase a $500 gift voucher or a couple of $500 gift vouchers. Or even a $1,000 gift voucher.

I am booked through to end August 2015 with previous gift vouchers. I will not purchase as many gift vouchers this year but will factor in purchasing enough gift vouchers to cover me through to August 2016.

For those who may not be spending $1000+ on flights and want to get the bonus points sooner rather than later.. YMMV

This is definitely a gift voucher?

What do you mean about bonus points? Buy a voucher now and the bonus points will arrive at the same time whether $50 or $1000.

Just had the same issue booking flight from BNE to AKL in J. Voucher price $190 more expensive than normal online booking. Called Qff and he confirmed the discrepancy and without any issues put through the flight at the online fare without any booking charges.
