I've found some of my best loyalty wins have been via status matches/offers/glitches (e.g Radisson VIP via Avolta, QR via VA, HH Diamond with VA Plat, IHG Ambassador Diamond) rather than clocking up the flights/nights. Still it's difficult to get a match if you never have status anywhere first.
