AFF Gathering #18 in MEL on 21-23 November 2025

Have upgraded from Gold to Platinum -- yay! I'm local but will book a hotel somewhere in the CBD.

Virgin 737-8 Max Business Class - No Divider

But is there space under the seats in front of the middle seat in row 3? From memory there's no space in front because it's where the legs of the business class seats in Row 2 are.

What is your favourite hotel loyalty program, and why?

I'd never heard of ALL Signature and I am now officially intrigued. From a Google search it seems to be an overseas subscription programme that Australians can access? Can you point me in the direction of a guide to the programme and/or any hacks such as special offers or deals?

Are the days of Points collecting over?

Yes, my Platinum Edge card earns Ascent Premium points.

What is your favourite hotel loyalty program, and why?

As someone who almost exclusively pays for my own accommodation and who isn't on a huge income, ALL is the way to go for me. I like how EITHER nights OR spend earns elite status, so even stays at budget hotels such as Ibis count towards qualification and re-qualification for (in my case) ALL...

Are the days of Points collecting over?

The sad reality is that the greater your income, the greater the ability to accumulate points (and, ironically, the less you need to!). For a long time I've had the very rough belief that if you can earn 300,000 points per $100,000 of income per year, you're doing well. Some people will be able...

Yes ... sorry ... my post was probably more narky than it needed to be!

Are the days of Points collecting over?

... or unless you're more nimble and creative in the ways you accumulate points. I'm getting 20,000 points offers from Flybuys every month or two -- that's 100,000ish FF points per year just from doing the grocery shopping that I'd normally do. Add that to the maybe 30,000 points per year from...

Are the days of Points collecting over?

Yes, and my point was that AmEx is still a valuable and value-for-money source of points. As credit card sign-up bonuses become both less lucrative and also more difficult to get approval for, cards such as AmEx become more and more important as a vital source of points. My point stands that the...

Are the days of Points collecting over?

Yeah, it used to be that members of certain Unions and Professional Associations (Accountants, Doctors etc and, in my case, teachers) could get the Platinum card for $1200 and the Platinum Edge for $150. I'm not sure whether that's still the case, which is another reason for me to not churn the...

Are the days of Points collecting over?

For me as a traveller, definitely worth it. I'm in a slightly different boat in that I'm only paying a $1200 annual fee and my Platinum Reserve still gives me a $400 travel credit on top of the $450 credit that comes with the Patinum charge card. And I use and value the Accor Plus membership...

Are the days of Points collecting over?

The days of points collecting are absolutely not over for me. I do find that I need to be very nimble, though, and I certainly don't rely solely on CC sign-up bonuses like I used to. Flybuys is particularly useful: their bonus point offers are pretty good, and I can easily accumulate well over...

Europe, with an Arctic cruise, a Balkan tour and bits of France and Malta

My recollection from using the funicular a few years ago is that I was able to use a Metro ticket. Is that not possible any more?

Transit through US a good idea or not?

Serious questions: what about the other nations that "treat all foreigners badly" but which haven't publicised it and/or where it hasn't been reported on by the media? I'm thinking of @drron 's harrowing Japan trip report, about the right of governmenrts such as China (including Hong Kong) to...

Transit through US a good idea or not?

Yes (although the reports I’ve seen are from February and March). I was just pointing out that being refused an ESTA is different from being stopped at the border, which is what some people are (in my opinion, unduly) concerned about.

Transit through US a good idea or not?

Without wanting to downplay the major inconvenience of having an ESTA refused, it’s at least not something that happens on arrival. It happens weeks or months before the flight, which at least gives the passenger time to make alternative arrangements.

Transit through US a good idea or not?

Correct me if I'm wrong but there have been no reports of people being randomly refused entry since about late March? And no reports of people who are merely transiting being refused entry at all? I would have no qualms whatsoever about transiting through the USA if the price is right.

Qantas General lounge pass - Use with non QF/Jetstar?

Here's the clear answer you're looking for from the Qantas website: "A Complimentary Lounge Invitation is an invitation to enjoy the Qantas lounge before you fly, or gift to another Qantas Frequent Flyer. The invitation provides single-visit access to eligible Qantas-operated lounges when your...

I believe that the only Fifth Freedom flight that Singapore Airlines flies out of Europe to the USA is from Frankfurt: FRA-JFK (I believe that they cancelled MAN-IAH a month or two ago?).
