A family member who is CLP1 status has often put in my points upgrade requests, recently these have been knocked back only 24 hours before flying. I thought a CLP1 would be notified a week out and be high on the upgrade priority or is this overruled by the fact te person traveling (me) is only a Gold? I seem to have had much more luck when I was a platinum ff and requests still came from a CLP1, however all my recent flights have been rather full so the upgrade possibilities may be limited.

The upgrade request is processed at GOLD time, but with CLP1 priority.

i.e. you will be top of the GOLD pile, and not on the earlier CLP1 pile.

Does the same apply for a WP putting in a request for a lower tier member?
ie. Above the NB/PS/SG requests? I had thought (apart from CL requests) it is the priority of the flyer, not requester.

Not as I understand it.

WP requesting for a Silver -> at Silver priority in order

WP1 requesting for a Silver -> at Silver priority but at the top of the Silver pile

My understanding is totally different to this, although my experience is in line with how you explain it.

The P1 section of the Qantas web site explains it as I did...but I am 90% sure this has recently been reworded, as I was certainly under the impression that if I requested an upgrade for a family member they would get MY priority, not theirs.

My recent experiences with this also confirmed this not-quite-as-good-as-I-once-thought perk.

To be honest, these days we almost never try for upgrades but rather either pay for the seat we want or get a suitable JASA/FASA. Chasing after upgrades or OpUps seems to be a very poor odds game likely to end in tears.

When a P1 uses their points to upgrade a family member and is not travelling, the travelling members request is processed at the time their own tier would usually be assessed, however when it is assessed, it receives P1 priority.

So, your tier determines the timing of your upgrade request, the fact that a P1 has made the request pushes your request to the top priority when it is assessed.

So, for a SG with an upgrade request from a P1 –
Your upgrade request will be assessed up to 24 hours before departure (in line with SG), but at this time, your upgrade request will be at the top of the pile as it is treated with P1 priority.

Yes, if you used to be WP then your request would be looked at up to 48 hours prior to departure and would have been a higher priority than other WPs if the P1 member requested it.

Thanks for clarifying that RedRoo. I had misunderstood this too and assumed that the person who was being upgraded took on the privileges of the WP1..i.e was treated as a WP1 with processing beginning 7 days out. Has the wording changed on the website?

I see this a positive for WP's and SG's and still a reasonable benefit for WP1's.

That seems logical & fair! As a WP I'd be dirty if a SG or lower was assessed higher up the food chain. If the WP1 or higher status member was part of the party - fair enough.

After all QF doesn't have a family pooling type of membership!

I believe the wording has changed, since I too was firmly of the belief that my WP wife's upgrade request which I made (not travelling with her) would be treated at my priority. Didn't happen in real life, so I looked at the website again and noted what appeared to be changed wording.

Frankly, this really irritated me. It seems fair to me that WP1's family members should get to share what little love is on offer occasionally.

Red Roo, if still watching this thread, here are two more massive Qantas annoyances from this WP1 (off-topic);

1. The $40 service fee for changes via phone. Sometimes with my routings and fares, I cannot make changes online, so I ring and the conversation goes;
"Hi, I'd like to spend $1000 to upgrade MEL-SYD return from cough Red eDeal to Business"
"Sure, the fare difference is $1000. Oh, and a $40 fee because you used the phone"
Don't know why this nickel 'n' diming infuriates me so, but it does.

2. Sometimes I book separate PNRs for the same trip for WP family. Even if I link my bookings with them, I still cannot select us all in row 1, just me, and they can't do it if I call up. (Same PNR is no problem - then I can do it.)

3. The P1 points/SC calculator is STILL broken and has been ever since P1 was launched.

ust a couple of reference to two points:

1: Generally these can be done on-line, and if it can't I have generally been able to get the fee waived.

2: This has always been a pain; however a call to Qantas generally results in a request being put through to "Seating" with the change being confirmed by viewoing online shortly thereafter. (I had a real problem when after being initially on the one PNR on a ATW with my SG wife - it was somehow split 'mid journey' (still same flights) - getting coherent seat allocation after that was a real PITA, however it was always successful.)

Thanks MichaelD, I will pass on your feedback to the P1 team.

I believe this is positive. So a platinum is still a platinum and does does get trumphed by a WP1's non status "niece" from Ireland!

Whilst I disagree, I don't think it is a battle of opinion that I will win (since there are so many more WPs than WP1s), even though it would be exceedingly rare that this would bump a WP out of an upgrade.

I see it as a perk along the lines of guesting lesser status relations/friends into the J or F lounges - just something nice that I can do courtesy of my 3600+ SCs worth of flying per year. I should be able to do a little something extra for them, shouldn't I?

I'm a WP1 and I think it would be a bit harsh to be able to use my status to get someone without status ahead of a WP. I think WP is becoming devalued enough as it is.

Having said that I would like to see a few more benefits for the WP1. (Preferably before my travel starts to drop off!!!)

Given the double status credit promotions it is soon going to be time for QF to either give CL access or create a new WP1 zone in the domestic J lounges.

Thanks RedRoo for clarifying the process. I think there have been varying hypotheses of how upgrades are processed if you have alook back over many years of threads. It's great to have a first hand answer.

Can I ask (if you know the answer):

For equivalent status travellers requesting on their own merit (ie. gold vs gold): what order are these processed? Time of request, "ranking" of FFer (ie. one Gold out ranks another), other method (fare class, last upgrade etc)?

Thanks
