QF reduce fuel surcharges on Awards

Still a rip-off, but better than nothing, I suppose.

Before I get even slightly thankful, I'm going to read the announcement closely. Remember the joy that met the announcement back in January only to hit reality when the details came out. AusBT article looks like a bit of a quick job, with lots of enthusiastic quotes from QF spin dept.

Qantas is cutting fees on tickets for international flights paid for with frequent-flyer points by between 3 per cent and 25 per cent in the wake of lower fuel prices.

The changes apply to economy and premium economy tickets for Qantas' international flights that are paid for by redeeming frequent-flyer points, and booked from July 1.

The greatest cut of 25 per cent is for flights from Australia to North and South America. Australia-Los Angeles is one of the most popular routes on which travellers use frequent-flyer points to pay for their tickets.
The latest changes equate to a $140 saving for a passenger on a return flight to destinations in the Americas.
The average reduction in fees for international flights is about 12 per cent.
Qantas last cut the cost of using points to pay for tickets by about 14 per cent in January, which equated to reductions of up to $110 for return economy tickets and $130 for premium economy at the time.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has been investigating passenger surcharges since January, but has yet to reveal whether it found any evidence of misleading or deceptive conduct. While it is legal to impose a surcharge, the regulator has made clear that it is against the law to mislead customers.

No mention about J/F. Shouldn't be any fuel surcharge at all. Just more QF BS spin.

Glad the last three posts reflected what I was thinking as well. This is hardly news. Maybe they should follow VA's footsteps, only then do they deserve 'priase'.

At least Red Roo was smart enough not to bother posting this announcement this time :)

Better than nothing; but Qantas is still way up there in world of fuel fines.

So J and F pax still have to pay inflated fuel fines? Shame.

Yeah. As I noted before, when fuel fines were going up, J and F got slugged more because they took up more real estate on the plane. Now fuel charges are coming down? Ha!

Really? Down from $600+ one-way on Europe flights to what?

Still way too high.

And if fuel has really dropped that much why are airfares continuing to increase? Less competition?

Removal of YQ ex-AUS on QF/EK

Hey all,

I noticed that QF/EK is not charging YQ on paid fares ex-Australia. Would this be reflected when redeeming Qantas points, or would the old YQ charges still apply?

Welcome to AFF :D

I have moved your question to the appropriate thread.

Basically some have been reduced for points redemption but they have not been removed.

Re: Removal of YQ ex-AUS on QF/EK

Sorry if this is somewhat off-topic, but I could not find a better thread. This is about charges on oneworld awards.

Recently cancelled an award flight on CX HKG-AKL in Y and replaced it with HKG-TYO-Amman(via DOH)-CDG-HEL-LHR on CX, QR,QR, RJ, AY and BA, all in Y. Got stung with over NZ$1100pp extra. The QFF staff were as confused as me, but said there were three substantial fuel charges involved, but they couldn't see what for! There's only one really long flight TYO-AMM. As far as possible, I have looked at the charges for the individual flights, and they do not seem to come close.

Any suggestions?

Ha ha! In spite of two consultants telling me it was GBP, the eticket has just been issued and it is NZ$! I am going to crack a bottle of good stuff. Incidently, I was told the eticket might take months to be issued, as the flights are not until next May.

Cheers!

Ned

Looking at award booking BKK-HKG-SYD and return in economy and the cost is 72,000 QFF points + THB9370 or ~AUD370.

Nearly fell off my chair.

From memory the taxes and fuel surcharges were >AUD550 when I last searched awards on BKK-SYD. Looking at direct BKK-SYD and return in economy the taxes and surcharges are ~AUD490 so the routing via HKG reduces the taxes and surcharges.

Wished I had booked with recent discount but looks to be a no-brainer go go via HKG and the 747 with a possible substitution to A380 instead of poxy A330 or even JQ via MEL. :shock

Fuel surcharges on HKG sectors are regulated. This has always been the case. If I want to go to the US on points, for example from SIN, it pays to travel via HKG rather than use other routings. Another option may be via a country where the advertising tells us "it's more fun", although unlike HKG it only applies to tickets commencing in that country, so couldn't do it on a single itinerary from BKK.

Still disgracefully high compared to Velocity.
Good to see the Qantas Comms (spin) department is still on top of their form!
