Here's something that just came up on my Twitter feed.

Naturally, it takes an airline only of the likes of Ryanair to do something like this...

Ryanair to introduce child free flights
Ryanair has announced it will introduce child-free flights from October.

It said the flights will be on high frequency routes, but would not provide further details.

...

The decision to operate child-free flights comes after the airline did a Europe-wide survey of 1,000 passengers.

It said the poll showed:

- half would pay higher fares to avoid other people’s children

- 36% have had flights ‘ruined’ by other people’s noisy kids

- 18% urged Ryanair to restrict the number of children on flights.

The survey found that passengers placed ‘blame’ firmly with parents...

I would have thought ryanair would prefer children. I can picture a bean counter somewhere saying "Who cares about the un-comfortable flight and noise when they weigh less? LESS FUEL! KA-CHING.... "Months later a surcharge for being an adult would apply, years later you will purchase your seat per kg.

Do you think this is an "April Fools" media release???

Let's see now ..... it appears first on coughters and the press release from these habitual jokers is dated the 1st of April. Not too hard to pick this one as a prank.

I'm not sure why I even bothered wasting my time to post this ....

What would be the legalities of it all though (even IF it is a hypothetical)

Don't know about British law, but i imagine here the legalities of it would be that as long as you or another business offer a similar sort of service that people with children can use at a reasonable time, that you can choose to make some flights adult only...

After all Fernwood or whatever can be a female only gym and probably say that there are similar gyms in the area available to men and women... If they were the only gym in an area (or a town) then they would probably be unfairly descriminating and so that would be illegal... There are men only buisness clubs as well though they are dying out a bit...

So as long as an airline also had a child/adult flight on the same route at a reasonable time of day, or there were sufficient other airline options on that route open to all ages, i imagine they might be able to get away with it if they could put up a reasoned case...

These April fools laughs that some companies put out, if this is one (and I don't know that it is), are also possibly a sly way to actually test ideas that at any other time of the year might get you shot down in flames.

For one day a year, if the idea causes mass outrage then you can simply laugh, put up your hands and say 'April Fool'

For those that can't stand kids on the plane - here is your answer!!

Child free flights from October 2011

Hmm,
1. 50% Parents who expect ‘special treatment’ because they have children.
2. 25% Parents who allow children to annoy those in seats behind.
3. 15% Parents who board late and expect others to accommodate them.
4. 10% Parents who allow children to run in the aisles or kick seats.
Not many surveys provide such a tidy set of numbers
