Just a FYI for everyone - received the following e-mail a few minutes ago from Qantas:

Hello xx_
From 7 July 2011 we are making changes to Qantas Frequent Flyer benefits including the ability to use points to upgrade to Business Class on all Qantas domestic Australian Economy fares (excluding Qantas and Partner Classic Awards)[SUP]+[/SUP].
Get in early!
To give you a taste of things to come, we have waived the restriction on upgrading your upcoming domestic Economy trip from MELBOURNE to ADELAIDE to Business using your Qantas Frequent Flyer points[SUP]#[/SUP]. Simply request your upgrade online at qantas.com by 1 July 2011.

The MEL-ADL booking it refers to is in late July. Not sure if this offer is targeted based on current loadings for that flight, or if they're sending it to all QFF members with Red e-deal bookings after 7th of July, but just thought I'd post about it here as a heads up for others so they can watch out for something similar (or ring Qantas to request if they don't get an e-mail).

re: Points upgrades on Red e-deals kicking in early & possibly including INT flights

And the Qantas website seems to have gone to sleep as at 12:30pm Syd time.

re: Points upgrades on Red e-deals kicking in early & possibly including INT flights

I've just received the same email for a BNE-ADL red e-deal on 14th July.

Having trouble logging on to QFF to upgrade though. Perhaps everybody got the email and the QF site is in melt-down:shock:

Overloading while the next 12 months of domestic U class is taken!

re: Points upgrades on Red e-deals kicking in early & possibly including INT flights

I haven't (yet) received the email, but my next red e-Deal flights are for September.

re: Points upgrades on Red e-deals kicking in early & possibly including INT flights

When I try to do any upgrade, the session now just hangs and shows this error.
Dam you Qantas I want my upgrades before they all vanish :p

are Q sale fares going to be upgradable too?

New upgrade rules benefit early - PER-MEL

I'm flying PER-MEL on 11 July, booked in Economy (E) class on the A330-200. I'm currently in 44A which is an exit row in economy, I believe.

Is it worth spending the points to upgrade to Business? I'm only sitting on c. 44,000.

Wow, there seems to be heavy traffic on the QF site at the moment. It's taking ages to log on and get to the bookings.

Will we get the relevant Status Credits with the upgrade? OR does it just mean that you can upgrade a basic economy flight to Business when you wouldn't normally be able to?

thanks :)

Welcome to AFF scenariogirl :D

You get points/SC's as per the class of originally booked segment. If you upgrade to Business from a red e-deal booking you get red e-deal points/SC's.

Thanks for such a fast reply! that's great :) Yes I'm still trying to get my head around all this stuff. I've been obsessed with FF and SC for years but not enough it seems going by how much you all know ;)

So I gues the only benefit is that you can upgrade from a cheap, typically un-upgradable ticket? is that all the fuss?

Phew!!! All done. That only took about an hour and a half. Just like trying to book a Jet* or Air Asia flight during a sale

Upgrade was for SWMBO. That has to be worth a few brownie points :D

Welcome to AFF scenariogirl.

Yes, that's what the fuss is about. previously non-upgradeable tickets were to become upgradeable on July7.
People with existing bookings seem to have been given a head start and can upgrade from today.

Thanks for the Welcome that's lovely :)

I seriously did not understand their email... Now I have to go and work out if the upgrade is worth it, since I don't get the Status credits it doesn't seem so worthwhile to me. I still feel like I'm missing something. I guess if I had lots and lots of points (only have about 80k atm) it would be worth it. I'm currently Gold.

We all have different ideas on what's "worth it".

In my case I have around 500k points and 12k points to upgrade Mrs P to J is a no brainer. She's already going ADL-BNE on a JASA and was returning on a red e-deal. Now she's flying both ways in J.

Happy wife = Happy life :D

I was about to log on and request an upgrade from my flight on Friday from DRW - ASP.... Then I remembered its a 717..... No J :(

Interesting.... I've never had this before... I've just logged on to look at my upcoming flights and the boss's name has come up on the ticket as well (he's a CL) along with mine... (in my frequent flyer bookings) anyone ever seen that before? IE i can choose his seat and stuff (not that i would bother...)

Not really surprised that QF brought this forward, as school holidays starting very soon, so generally less premium traffic.
