Noticed this new check-in option on the Qantas web site.

Auto Check-in has started rolling out across the Qantas domestic network.
If you're on a flight with Auto Check-in and you are a single passenger, we'll send you an SMS or email in the lead up to your departure. Follow the link to confirm your seats and access your boarding passes on your preferred device.
Make sure you update your number in Manage Your Booking.
You can use your digital boarding pass on your smartphone or tablet, or print it out if you have accessed your boarding pass via email. Or, if you have the Qantas app, you'll continue to receive a notification allowing you to complete a quick and simple check-in, and be automatically notified of any changes to your flight.
Once checked in, you'll be able to pass straight through the airport and go straight through to the gate or lounge. It's the perfect option for the busy traveller.

Bags
If you need to check bags, simply print your bag tags from a kiosk or bag tag printer and head to Bag Drop. If your bags have Q Bag Tags, go straight to Bag Drop*. If you have two eligible segments in the same flight, it's essential you have both boarding passes before dropping your bags off.

Rollout

Auto Check-in is currently available for selected flights on the following routes:
Sydney - Perth - Sydney
Sydney - Adelaide - Sydney
Sydney - Darwin - Sydney

* Not available at Cloncurry, Moranbah, Hamilton Island, Mount Hotham, Gladstone or Geraldton.

I used this extensively in Europe this year with Emirates and Aegean airlines.

I'm not sure I understand what makes this different from the existing mobile and online check-in options. Does the link provided simply save you the additional step of downloading an app or typing in the web address manually in your browser?

I understood it to mean that at the allotted time you'd receive a message saying you can now check-in, with a 1-step link allowing you to do so. Or perhaps go one step further and just check you in, then send a link to a BP to save.

I still like and prefer OLCI and then the bar code scan way on the QF FF card.
I am a big fan of QF's - tap at the pole, flash in the lounge & scan at the gate. Simple, quick and easy.*

(* except at half the domestic lounges that don't accept a flash, and the dragon has to to take the card and scan it or manually type something into their computers.)

As do I, only thing I add is I collect a cardboard stock BP for my collection, in the lounge.
I used to love collecting the cardboard boarding passes. Still ask for cardboard boarding pass but the passion for collecting is not the same.

No interest in having electronic boarding pass.

No really sure if it's anything special.

Re: Check-in comes to you ["Auto" Check-in Domestic]

If it was really "auto" then it would just check you in without you having to do anything. At best this is "auto check-in reminder".

Re: Check-in comes to you ["Auto" Check-in Domestic]

Very uninteresting. Auto check in when you book the ticket would be good. Other airlines can do it.

It's not necessarily a good thing, especially if the ticket is potentially refundable. If you are checked in and eventually no show you'll have more grief trying to change the ticket.

Re: Check-in comes to you ["Auto" Check-in Domestic]

The whole concept of checking in is outdated for domestic flights. Book a ticket and you're on. Just turn up to get boarding pass/check bags. No doubt this would create some new challenges however I can think of some revenue opportunities to turn it into a money spinner
