Hi all,

I have a business flight from Dublin to Hong on CX next July, then will be taking an economy flight onwards from Hong Kong to Melbourne. Just wondering, is there any way I would be able to access the business departure lounges in Hong Kong, or can I only access the Arrival lounge (which I've heard is pretty substandard)? I don't have premium status with oneworld or CX unfortunately...

You'll have access to the Arrivals lounge - which is fine for a shower and a light refreshment. You may have access to one or more of the oneworld business lounges.

The only way to access the air-side lounges is to be flying out of HKG on a oneworld flight and have either oneworld Sapphire/Platinum status, be in First/Business class on that flight or in some cases be connecting to/from another "longhaul" oneworld flight in First/Business class.

First and Business Class customers connecting on the same day of travel, or before 6am the following day, can access the lounge when travelling between an international long haul (a oneworld international long haul flight is defined as an international flight marketed and operated by any oneworld carrier with a scheduled flight time longer than 5 hours) and an international short haul or domestic flight (and vice-versa).

I’m fairly sure you have access to the business lounge for your melbourne bound flight. Both flights are Oneworld, both flights are on the same day? And a long haul (Dublin - Hong Kong) flight is in business.

The rule you quote does not actually apply. Assuming the MEL flight is on oneworld then there is still the issue of the MEL flight being an international long haul flight since it is over 5 hours.

In which case they might not consider it to be an "International Shorthaul Flight" and so not qualify for such access.

It depends on the mindset of those who permit entry to the lounges.

YMMV

This rule won't apply as the OP is not travelling between and international long-haul and short-haul. Both flights are long-haul.

The Arrival Lounge is a given. No worries there.

CX is however known to be quite liberal sometimes in granting lounge access. As part of check-in at DUB the OP will be issued with boarding passes to HKG and onwards to BNE. If these flights are all on the one booking it has been known in some cases for the system to spit out a lounge invitation card for HKG. If the OP gets one of these then they can also use the CX lounges while in transit.

Without that card it can be a little more difficult - worth trying at the lounge but the downside is that if lounge access is refused, it's then a bit hard to get back out to use the Arrival lounge.

I wouldn't bother with the arrivals lounge. I was 'stuck' there for 8 hours. it's tiny and had rudimentary food offerings.

really should've just paid and went to the 'proper' lounge next door.

Just read that the Arrivals lounge will be permanently closed:
Permanent closure of the CX Arrivals Lounge at HKIA
We popped in there briefly last Friday night and whilst not a great lounge it is handy if you arrive early morning and just need a quick shower and bite to eat. One of the staff members mentioned that it would be shutting on November 5th and eventually all of T2 will be shut for 4 years to do renovations. She did mention CX had hoped to open a new arrivals lounge when the terminal was complete

It's was by no means a great lounge (and the dungeon location didn't help). But it served its purpose.

My use for an arrivals lounge is shower, shave, quick bite then leave. This lounge was also useful to wait till the first train service started.

Timing is everything. I had planned a visit in early January off a BOS flight scheduled 6am. Oh well, the nearby PP lounge still appears to be available - I hope that does not close by then.

The CX staff think the PP is scheduled to stay open until mid year but best to check ahead
