I suspect some of you will find it hard to believe that I have only just, today, watched "Up in the Air". It turned into a bit of a scary movie for me. In fact it opened my eyes to my own behaviour, but that is a whole other story!

Whilst our good friend Mr Bingham travels more than I ever could or would I suspect we have some members here who travel more so come on! Who is our very own Ryan Bingham......and what criteria do we need to judge the one AFF member who can wear his crown?

I would have thought BIS miles was the fairest meassure. Comparing SCs etc is not necessarily "equal" across airlines.

The alternative would be highest FF rank (CIP / Customer Value) which would require CL or equivalent in any program to even be in the race. But it's possible to be highest rank but not done most BIS miles.

You would also need a weighting for "current" miles (eg. current calendar year) vs "old" miles - reflecting lifetime miles essentially.

A combination of the following:

- Number of flights per year.
- Number of miles flying per year.
- Number of nights in hotels.
- Number of cities visited in a year.

Title should go to anyone who can produce the door key to a Formule 1 in South america.;)

At the start of the film as he's walking through the airports he talks about averaging 300,000 miles a year.

Last year I did 240,000 miles, and this year will only end up around 175,000 miles so I'm well short of that. :(

I seem to recall one AFF member saying they did over 500,000 miles last year but I can't recall who it was...

I have logged 3 million miles over 54 years and have hit 500k miles in a year. But I'm sure I'm a baby in the woods to some here. ;)

My modest proposal

AFF Status = (flights per year* + (miles travelled/1000)) x (1+(total status levels above baseline on separate programs** / 10))

*1 flight = one take off, one landing
**eg silver qf, equivalent on Krisflyer = 2 above baseline so the multiplier is 1.2
I would be (24+60)*1.1
So my AFF status is 92.4 (no doubt quite a modest number I suspect)

Only BIS earned status should count. Not status granted via a 'comp', 'Challenge' or 'status match'.

Also, flights over last five/ten years ...

That's quite an admission. That movie has been around for more than 18 months.

Yep, but I just never saw it as a movie for me! I'm a little odd in my tastes. (My favourite movies are The Third Man, Kind Hearts and Coronets and David Lean's Great Expectations.....oh and of course Branagh's Henry V.)

In the end I quite enjoyed Up in the Air, but I did find it a little disconcerting because I do value my time and found myself agreeing with Mr Bingham on a few things.

felt the same way...

My only issue is how they are earned. If it is from all sources, i.e. credit card, car rental, shopping, hotels, bonus status miles, cabin status miles etc as well as actual miles flown it becomes a little less impressive. I say this because I currently earn 800,000 a year, of which over 400,000 come from flying......but I only fly just over 200,000 miles a year!

oh, another thing ... double points for domestic USA WHY segments over 1000 miles on legacy carriers ...:p
