does anybody have an idea how to keep sim cards that are not in use safe while travelling?

there are sleek sim card holders. i got mine on "mishu things". google it! as i am new here i am not allowed to post web links.

If it's just one sim card, there is often enough room in the phone between the phone and the battery to store it.

Then again, if you have an iPhone - that's just not possible.

Another option is a small holder such as the case for SD Memory cards. You might have one lying around or a friend might have a spare one.

I use a piece of sticky tape to stick it back in the credit card sized thingy it came out of and store it in my wallet.

Crude but effective.

I normally store mine inside those snap close plastic cases you get with memory cards from the bigger manufacturers these days (SanDisk et al). Makes it so easy to find, and small enough to sit in the coin pouch of a wallet and stay safe.

Here's what I keep it in:

I picked a cheap plastic cc sized holder off ebay - cost me $3 incl. postage. Has been used to death! I was lucky enough to get a 2nd thrown in (gave it to a friend who also travel regularly) - both hold 4 sims and space for phone card as well, but I need to get another - doublesided would be very handy.

A word about iPhone security. The screen lock PIN is different to the SIM Card PIN. For best security on the iPhone, a user needs two pins so that the SIM card can't be removed and used in another phone.

My Oroton leather wallet has a place for 2 SIM cards...best wallet I've ever bought!!!

i finally got the one from mishu-things. it's excellent. recommend it!
What is your relationship to Mishu-things, MacFin & Ron888? MacFin & Ron888 both joined same day as this original post (20th November) and have made no other posts. MacFin one and only post about 10 minutes after this thread was started.

Post like No #2 reinforce to me why it is valuable not to have the 'new members can't post links'. Keeps the spammers at bay.

I know this may not sound like a good solution but it works for me and has been working for over 3 years.

Fold an ATM receipt in half (thermal paper?) and this creates enough room to store 2 sim cards. Keep them about 1/2 inch apart and store inside wallet. I have an old sim (no longer connected to any network) which I use as my backup for phone numbers and current Thai sim card.

Never had a problem with the sim cards.

I have just received 4 sim holders from Mishu-Things. Admit I was a little sceptical after previous posts questioning possible spammers, but they arrived in Thailand in a timely manner and are everything you could possibly want from a sim-card holder.

  • they actually fit 4 simcards (the other PVC types available on Ebay fit 3 at most!)
  • for Iphone users, the sim-tool holder will be invaluable
  • well made - even taken the time to stamp their "mishu" type into them
  • fit my wallet perfectly
(And my PA/producer loves the two I gave her her as well.)

All up, a well spent $USD14.00 - certainly beat the two replacement ones I picked up late last year off Ebay.

*better late than never*

I'm not sure if we used to sell these or if they were done for promo purposes, but I have a heap of these around the place (because of all the SIM cards I have to have for my day to day job in testing the product)

It's a hard plastic holder the size of a credit card, and about twice as thick for the SIM to 'slide' into. This holds them in perfectly (the back of each slot has a ridge in it to grip the SIM in the slot so it doesn't fall out).

If anyone is interested in them, let me know and i'll find out if we have any around.

That looks like a good idea. Would be interested in knowing if you have any around!

Seems to be a bit of interest! I'll see what I can find (telestial is our retail arm that sells SIM cards, hence the branding and product).

I'll speak to our product manager (I'm one of the techs) and see what's available.

*edit*

I've been given a couple of these by the product manager to distribute to people who want them. I only have a small handful of them so first in first served.

Drop me an IM with your details if you want one:)
