Hi John,

Also currently available on JQ special is Mel/Bkk/Mel for AU$1,098 which earns 240 QF SCs and 20,580 QF miles for a WP. Very good value for money, for an AU originated and terminated flight. If needed, this is a quick, convenient and low cost SC and mileage earner.

Re: Miles on Sale

FWIW, the *Class seats from OZ are quite adequate for the afternoon flights to SIN/BKK/etc.

IMHO, no so for the return red eyes.

Hi Serfty,

JQ30 leaves BKK around 2115 and arrives Mel 1045 the next day. JQ29 leaves Mel around 1430 and arrives Bkk around 2030. Very social hours. Nice schedule which lets me put in 3 hours in the Mel QF F lounge. The Salt n Pepper Squid they serve literally melts in your mouth. So yes a very nice afternoon and flight to Bkk. QF F lounge in Bkk is just a smaller version of the J lounge with the same food and drinks.

Overall a nice trip both ways and no red eye flights.

Re: Miles on Sale

Huh?!

a 9pm overnight flight from BKK to MEL arriving at 1045am the next day is a red eye flight!

I have flown it twice - both times in Star Class! (e.g http://www.australianfrequentflyer....otos/jetstar-star-class-impressions-8472.html)

Hi Sefty,

Red eye to me is a QF flight leaving Adl at 0600 or earlier. I've taken way too many of those to get to the Eastern states for morning meetings.

I always get a good sleep on JQ30 and I also fly StarClass. 3 or 4 glasses of Shiraz, ear plugs, the noise cancel earphones, eye shades, pull the blanket up and I'm history. Never bother with the video units or eating much. Normally sleep all the way to the fasten seat belts, window shades and seat backs up call.

OK, your definition varies from the norm.

Red-eye flight - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

For me a red-eye flight typically moves east during the overnight hours. It departs evening/late at night, lasts only about four to eight hours, an insufficient period to get fully rested in flight, and due to forward time zone changes the aircraft lands in the daylight morning.

FWIW, I don't like the *Class leather seating if trying to sleep. Eventually perspiration covers me. :-|

Unusual definition. Red eye generally means you depart before or around bed time and arrive in the morning having had little or no sleep.

Hi Serfty,

Had that happen once, then packed a set of the well worn gray QF J pajamas in the carry on bag. Problem fixed. Some time I get funny looks as the other PAXs see the flying kangaroo and some ask where they can buy them. Maybe JQ should supply their own version as it would not add much to the cost of the Orange amenities bag and the headphones.

Hi Baysider,

Not unusual if you live in Adelaide and must make morning meetings or appointments in the Eastern cities. You arrive with Red Eyes from getting up at 0400 to make a 0600 or earlier flight. Very common saying in Adelaide. We call those flights "The Red Eye Specials". Hate em. Try to avoid them like the plague but not always possible.

We do cop the same from Brisbane, heading south to a "daylight saving" state, in fact the get up at 0400 for the 0600 flight to Melbourne is very familiar. However, I still call the red-eye the overnight one, not the early rise one.

Can't say I call them a red eye special. But that's just me, I guess. I catch a 6am flight every Monday and I'm used to the early start now.

Also I think there is a curfew in ADL that means no jet flights leave before 6am. There is a 5:45am F50 to prominent hill (IIRC) and maybe a rex flight somewhere.

Hi,

Just checked with WebJet and you are correct. 0600 is the earliest flight from Adl. Brain must be a bit fuzzy as I do remember catching a 0540 flight to Sydney some time ago but that may be my tired brain.......:(

Anyway bed time. Cya,

I would not call them red-eyes, just OMG O'clock departures. Similar symptoms though. :)

I used to get that back when I would catch QF400 to SYD on a weekly basis for several months. (I live on the opposite side of the City to MEL, so this meant a 3:30am wakeup.) Eventually I was able to prosecute a request to travel the evening before.

I guess its an Adelaide thing, where there probably aren't any real 'red-eye' flights as such. Certainly from Perth the flights leaving around midnight were called things like 'red-eye special' and 'midnight horror'. Leaving on the early morning (5-6 am flights) were luxury in comparison.

I remember reading once that the origin of the 'special' bit was because some airlines used to discount the fares to get people to fly on them.

When I lived in Darwin red-eye flights were renowned, especially at the start of school holidays and particulraly the Christmas ones. They often left "down south" just before any curfew and arrived back there shortly after curfew lifted. Darwin airport was often buzzing at those times-multiple flights within a short space of time often tot he same place. Often confuson because pax would misread the date and not realise it changed at midnight (or were too intoxicated after staying up partying prior to the flight and hence were a day early or late. Reservations staffw ere occasionally abit limited in their awareness too and didn't look further to realsie such red-eyes existed. Maybe the GDS was more basic back then.

Worse are the ones waking up 0230-0300 for the 0500 departures. :(

I am going against the trend here.

I actually don't mind red-eye flights as I could do what I please all day before the flight and then grab a few hours sleep at the destination and do what I want for the rest of the day. Even better when returning home.

The flights I hate the most are the early morning 5:00am-6:00am flights where one has to be up at 3:00am-4:00am breaking up a night's sleep and then wasting the day at the destination due to tiredness and need to sleep.

I'd take 5-6am departures over red-eyes any day. Just got of QF 648 (PER-MEL) a week go and I felt like absolute cough upon arrival. Because of the tail-winds, the flying time is only 3.30 + because of the meal service, the lights don't turn off until an hour after take-off which gives you a dismal 1.5-2 hours sleep before arrival. (I find it hard to sleep with cabin lights on - don't really know why .. )

My main issue is that quite often on your outbound flight you arrive somewhere to discover that your room won't be ready for another 6 hours!

It seems (and it keeps things interesting ) a number of us have differing views.

In my lexicon, this flight is a not a red-eye. It is simply an overnight flight, and while not a preference, is often unavoidable (without going to impractical lengths).

0400-0600 departures, similarly, are not red-eyes. They fall into the 'to be avoided wherever possible' category.

~2300-0100 departures from Perth to the East coast of Oz however, are classic 'red-eyes'. Departures at a latish but still reasonable bedtime, followed by arrival at an early but still reasonable 'get up' time, but with only 3 to 4 hours elapsed time, combined with 'difficult' sleeping conditions in between clinches this.* Also to be avoided where possible.

I may well be out-of-step with the majority of travellers on my definition of a red-eye, and may need to revise it, but that's it as it is now.

*Despite having said that, the only PER-MEL red-eye I recall taking involved meticulous preparation (at an all afternoon BBQ, followed by some quality time in the bar at PER), meaning I was asleep as soon as my butt hit the seat, and woke when the wheels hit the MEL tarmac.

Unfortunately I was still 'prepared' enough that I directed the cab the wrong and long way to my home ("you sure you want to go this way mate?" "Yes I am" ) to the tune of an extra 10-20 bucks over the normal fare.
