Qantas have release a statement: Wing tip incident at Los Angeles hangar

Some posts on FT indicate the airbus has the most damage (with some pix):

There is literally a giant hole a couple feet long in the wing of the 380, just inside the wingtip. Presumably from the winglet of the 47 going through it. These planes will not be flyable for awhile, especially considering Qantas doesn't have the tools to fix them at LAX. They'll probably have to bring in Boeing and Airbus to take care of it.

Things go from bad to worse.

OJA is out of service in JNB. Unable to operate return QF64 on Friday.

Due to no spare being available it will be a few days before they can get QF15/16 back on schedule. An A380 is positioning to LAX at the moment to get A380 operations back to normal.

QF16 is showing on time (Fri 28/2) but there is no 747 in LAX to operate the flight so it will be delayed overnight.

LonelyFlyer, I don't disagree with anything you have said, but in the end with the existing schedules, QF will have to find another two aircraft (presumably both B744s) to replace the 'lost' A388 and B744.

So does QF normally have two B744s spare in its fleet, assuming that none of them are in for planned or sudden unplanned maintenance? (My assumption here might be unlikely - perhaps there is always at least one 'bird' in planned maintenance).

Saturday 1 March's QF9 from MEL to DXB and LHR has been put back to 2300 tonight in lieu of its usual 1615 departure from MEL.

Does this suggest that an A388 or perhaps more likely in view of the temporary unavailability of one of the 12 A388s, a B744 is having to fly empty (deadhead) from SYD?

Meanwhile the replacement aircraft for the delayed QF16 due out of LAX local time at 2350 on Thursday 27 February has not long departed LAX at 1319 on Friday 28 Feb., and is due into BNE 12 hours of 55 minutes late at 2055 tonight (Saturday 1 March).

The similarly delayed QF94 from LAX to MEL that was timetabled ex LAX at 2330 on Thursday 27 February managed to get away a bit earlier at 1127 on Friday LAX time and should arrive MEL at 2150 tonight (Saturday 1 March). In line with usual QF practice it is operating as QF94D, 'D' for 'delayed'. The aircraft is QF A388 VH-OQJ that had earlier arrived in LAX on QF93.

With the usual rosters and not counting any aircraft in for planned maintenance, how many B744s does QF normally have as 'spares' sitting in say SYD? How many spares in total?

QF94D VH-OQJ will operate tonight's QF9 to London, hence the 7 hour delay.

If VH-OQJ is arriving from LAX at 2150 tonight in MEL, I cannot see how it would be off blocks at 2300. All passengers would not be off the aircraft until just after 2200, then it has to be reprovisioned, cleaned and bags loaded and unloaded, as well as passengers boarding in time. 0001 on Sunday 2 March would be a more realistic departure time, but the super long layover in LHR should mean that the late running does not delay the normal return which from memory is QF2 (not QF10) ex LHR, in this case on Sunday night 2 March.

Interestingly, just 4 hours out QF16 to BNE hadn't been cancelled yet. The only way this flight can operate is if the damaged B744 is repaired already, which is unlikely. Passengers are going to be unhappy if cancelled last minute and QF knew this all day.

Plenty of spares an hour and a half away by car at VCV for the 744, some even preprinted in the right scheme!
