Happy Australia Day folks!

Was having a fiddle with the Star Alliance route Map this morning and noticed that the regular United Airlines HNL<->GUM service now offers stops in Micronesia and the Marshall Islands. Specifically, Chuuk (TKK), Pohnpei (PNI), Kosrae (KSA), Kwajalein Island (KWA) and Majuro (MAJ) using a 777. It was probably announced on airlineroute.net at some point but it escaped me. There's some spectacular diving and beautiful beaches among those atolls/islands, but seemingly limited accommodation. Just transiting some of these islands would be nice for the views and 'interesting' runways that Google Earth reveals.

United offer a CNS<->GUM service that connects up to this little network of islands. And if time is no issue, you can route via AKL to connect up to CNS to save on any positioning flights (eg. PER-AKL-CNS). If really keen to maximise routing, you could use the BNE-TPE-GUM, SYD-ICN-GUM or AKL-NRT-GUM services since you'd only be transiting North Asia and your destination would be considered Guam (South Pacific). Of course all of this would be subject to MPM though...

Assuming you didn't go on to HNL and instead just looped back via Guam to Cairns (or transiting North Asia), a US DM award in business class visiting Guam and all 5 locations (2 x stopovers >24 hours, and the remainder transits <24 hours) requires only 30K points return. Using the recent SHARE promo(s) as a basis for calculation, that's roughly $380 USD + taxes, or using the BUY/GIFT promo more like $600 + taxes. I'm assuming taxes would come in at ~$100-200 depending on how many airports you traversed.

Remember that the US DM partner burn rates rate consolidate into AA at the end of March so be quick in case these little gems disappear at that time.

Good thread link. Was a little sceptical about a 777 servicing these routes on the small runways so a 738 sounds more realistic.

UA200 is the non stop service that uses B777, the island hop is a B 738 a la UA155 IIRC

Been popular for a while

Im a bit confused by the OP- you start off by saying you want to use USDM to do the island hopper then say that you just want to use the points to visit Guam on a SWP award? Are you suggesting you get to guam and do the island hopper for only 30k points? I don't think it can be done.

The island hopper aervice has been noted as having minimal award availability in the past

Suggesting that on a US DM award you have two stopovers to use where you like, and transits of up to 24 hrs if flight timings permit. How you route to/from the island is entirely up to you (and availability).

I think the hopper is every second day or so with some islands having longer breaks.

Which would mean you can't have <24 hr 'stopovers'.

Meaning no J or no J or Y? It's a lot of UA Y flying if there's only Y available. There's a FT trip report of someone who did it in J and said even J wasn't that great.

To do the island hopper you'd have to go to HNL wouldn't you? No-one on AFF has ticketed a 30k award via HNL.

PS I'm currently in NGO- I'm heading to Guam tomorrow.

Indeed, hence why I originally stated that some islands may be a quick transit through the airport on your way to somewhere else where you choose to have 1 of your 2 stopovers (>24 hours)

Certainly limited availability and not doubting that the UA 738 J is not exactly luxurious.

Are you in Guam on business or leisure? What does your itinerary look like out of interest?

what two stopovers?

USDM awards are allowed one stopover only.
