Flew out on fri nite from LAX on QF12. About 30 mins before calling boarding there were PA announcements in the lounge about size and weight of carry on baggage and if the bags were too big/heavy, they would be checked at the gate.
One of the QF staff then pulled a baggage check stand out into the middle of the boarding lane and passengers sort of queued up at it to check their bags. I only heard the announcement twice, but it got people moving.
Within half an hour they had about 20 bags stacked behind them to be checked, and some rather "angry" passengers because of it.
The stand was removed about 10 mjins before boarding was called, but I noticed as I passed through they had caught another guy with a bloody suitcase, rather than carry on and he was also getting unhappy as I walked past.
So if you are traveling, be aware if you are not within the rules.
By the way, the "new" LAX departure area looks fantastic with shops, food outlets (no, not all McDonalds!) and more - really looks great

I don't see what excuse people have to be annoyed, embarrassed yes, but not annoyed. It's really up to you to check the rules, just because they are not enforced at one point does not mean its a green light.

I like to board early and it amusing to watch people come down the aisle struggling with their carry on weight wise.

Its very cultural depending what part of the world you are in and from!

Couldnt agree more Markis. Its about time airlines got serious about enforcing carry on limits in terms of number of size of and weight of. It is one of my pet hates that it is so lax Grrrrrrrrrrr

I don't think anyone in America reads the rules - they just carry everything on board! There was one bin upstairs last night that had so much in it the flight attendant could not push it up to close it! I know she might have been short, but it took 2 guys to get up and close it! And I don't think either of them had bags in it!

Had the lady in front of me with 4 bags as we lined up to board the aircraft on Friday; Swear her main bag was overweight, her excuse for being "Weak" to have a Crew member help her put the bag in the overhead was just rubbish....

I think this is great, something Qantas and virgin could get a lot better at.

If they need lessons on being hardass they should go and do work experience at Etihad :)

Good on them and I hope it continues. And 95% of the offenders will be Americans who don't think different airlines have different rules.

If only they would police luggage like this more regularly...

Never one to complain, on the topic of LAX airport, sure the shops are all nice and new and the terminal is up to modern standards, but until they get the new lounge finished the current First lounge in LAX is just abysmal. Could barely get a seat! cough food/wifi/drinks etc etc. poor signage post security doesn't help either.

True. It's awful.
Until the new one is open, just spend all your LAX time shopping at Fred Segal.

The bags that are slightly over the limit I don't mind - it is the ones clearly over the limit and ignored by staff that cause most of the problems

I'm a serial rule breaker in respect of weight ( not size) of carry-on, and not sorry for it. 7 kg, or 10 kg? Or more? What's the diff? I believe the weight was originally determined by what a ' 'hostie' could be expected to hoist into an overhead bin. I never ask for that - in fact I'm the one helping the hosties!

Until they start weighing pax to the nearest 5 kg, weight of carry on makes no diff to anyone except the pax who wrangles the bag. BTW you are allowed 2 pieces with Qantas, each 7 kg! So 14 kg. if it's in 1 bag, and on the floor under seat in front, again, what's the issue?

But I'm solidarity personified when it comes to numerous, and / or bulky carry on.

Cant argue with that one either!

Maybe they need to reduce the allowance? Because I suspect that if everyone brought the allowance on board it wouldn't all fit. It's getting close to that now. I think that's why there is a bit of customer angst about boarding early. I know it's an issue with my partner who travels for work.

Maybe a better scheme is to buy an increased onboard allowance. Reduce it overall to a briefcase and one additional small item. If you didn't purchase the extra then in the hold it goes. No discussion.

Or just simpley enforce the rules that are in place. If you have ever travelled with say Ryan Air or Easy Jet people dont do it because they know that they will hit hard for baggage charges. IMHO people who abuse the allowance are selfish and are typical of the attitude of todays society "Up Yours Jack Im OkaY"
