So has OEB been refurbed yet if it is staying

No, still old equipment as of two weeks ago when I flew her (a lot better internally than OJA and C), she was reconfigured in July to match the other two aircrafts with four class.

Is there a way to find out which rego will be operating a particular flight in advance?
Is it only available retrospectively?

EDIT: This may be a very stupid question, apologies

I'm not aware of any publicly available way, though some AFF members may be able to determine a bit in advance due to their occupations (and I'm guessing are not really allowed to disclose).

I'm on a 4-class 744 operating QF5 SYD-SIN in a couple of days' time. When I booked it was a refurb, but that has changed in the last 10 days. It's a shame we're not in J to potentially select the F seats (there's a few unallocated) for SWMBO and myself on the flight. Y+ was all I could get cleared by the minister of finance for this 7 hour daylighter to the equator :(

Cheers.

We're looking at QF5 SYD-SIN in December and currently our flight has the F section sold as C with 32 PE seats. We were going to fly PE, however, if there was a good chance that they will keep the old 747 that day I'd say we splurge for C (and get ourselves into the old F seats).

Given that it's almost 1 year from now, what are the chances of the flight to stay an old 747 with F section sold as C? If they are going to replace all of them I think I'll just go with PE for this day flight.

A lot can happen in a year, I doubt it will stick.

Just did a bit more reading on QF5 and as our flight is close to Christmas next year and given QF did an equipment swap to a 330 and put the 747s on the SYD-BKK route over last Xmas I'm not sure what to do. If I book PE it's likely we will not have any PE on our flight and I don't want to route via BNE or get downgraded. But if I splurge for C I would only do it to get into the F section on the old 747s and if they swap to A330 I will be in old style C seats with not even an option for cancellation offered.

Any comments on whether this was a once-off equipment swap over Xmas between SYD-SIN and SYD-BKK or is this likely to happen again?

We might be better off saving the money and going in Y with the family....at least the product will be pretty consistent (albeit uncomfortable) across all aircraft options.

You are taking a risk this far out. From memory there are only 3-4 747's with the old F in them.
Like you said the downgrade to the 330 could occur, or you get a refurb with no F section.

Your call really, but are you a betting man?

I'd like to take a chance sometime....so booked us into PE...thinking of maybe doing a second backup booking just in case. What would happen if I book us again in C on the same flight? Would QF notice and cancel one of the bookings? I would keep both until we know whether they swap again with the SYD-BKK route...need to check the cancellation deadline on the C ticket though.

Ms Chooms & I are doing QF5 early April (in PE with upgrade request to J).

QF5 timing was changed from a 1300 departure to a 1500 departure a couple of weeks ago, along with an aircraft change from new config to old config with F seats.

EF is currently showing J9 C9 D0 I0 W9 R7 T1 Y9 B9 H9 K9 M9L9 S0 G0 E0 for QF5 with this seat map:

We are currently in 35J & K.

What are the chances of the upgrade request coming through and a couple of those old F seats being available ;)

Quite reasonable for the former and for the latter(being WP).

Put an ExpertFlyer seat alert on your allocated 35J/K - if they beocome free you should get a headup and can aim for two of those 14 zone A seats.
