I am heading to the US in 2015 and will need two business class return tickets. So around the $1000 mark. I don't won't to rip him off as I would like him to come to me again in the future
Personally I value QF points only on a good day at 1c, yes I know you can get more value than that out of them but there are plenty of options much less than that too. Have you actually asked them, sounds to me they value at $0, so I'd split the difference at $500.That's probably around a fair mark - and actually thinking about it - basically converts to cash the points value through credit card spend (1c per $).
And $1000 is not insignificant.
But I don't think there's an conscience issue with $1000 being 'too low' - it's justified by several different methods.
I'd go with $1000 too, but perhaps a gift of similar value might be more appropriate.

given that FF points can't be sold, exchanged or otherwise bartered - I just be giving family relative a huge 'thank you' and white envelope.
(which happened to contain $1000)
I purchase some Qantas Frequent Flyer points so I had enough for a business class flight and paid $520 for 20,000 points.I have a family member that has 100,000 frequent flying points but hates flying. He has earn them from credit card and what not over the years and offered me them. My question what is a fair price for this amount of points?
Except on Gumtree by looks of it.
