I am booked in PE (W) on QF28 SCL-SYD on 21 Dec and I have an UPG request in for J.

LA807 codeshares on QF28.

EF is currently showing:

QF 28 SCL-SYD: J1 C0 D0 I0 W0 R0 T0 Y9 B9 H9 K9 M0 L0 G0 E0
LA 807 SCL-SYD: J2 D0 I0 R0 Y7 B7 H0 K0 M0 L0 V0 S0 N0 Q0 O0 X0 E0

Question: Does anyone know for UPGs whether the two airlines retain their own allocation of seats to departure or at some point prior does pooling happen? If so, do the hard carrier-ticketed pax get precedence when it comes to UPG allocations?

That's the specific question but I guess I'm also interested in the general question of how seat allocation works on codeshares to ultimately ensure the bird lifts with both pax demand and yield management load satisfied.

Calling Serfty, I think ;)...

Seats go back to the carrier at the time the aircraft goes under airport control, typically at T-24.

I was denied a points upgrade from W to J on QF27 in March this year. I was told by QF that "the only remaining seats in J are LAN seats and we can't touch them".

W was pretty good though.

I thought I had seen something along these lines previously - maybe it was you who had posted this information before? It was that recollection, in combination with the asymmetric J availability showing on EF that prompted my post.

At what point did the denial happen - ie. did you ask at checkin or in the lounge?

QF27 going over on 27 Nov. is showing a lot of QF J inventory so hopefully I'm in with a chance on that sector; QF28 on 21 Dec as shown in my first post looks tight.

It will be my first experience of W if I don't get a UPG, so I'm not overly concerned. One thing that I have noticed on QF28, however, is there appears to be a baby in the cabin as I was moved from 34A to 36B with no notice. By the time I saw the change, there were none of my preferred window seats left.

I didn't ask at checkin but I asked at the F lounge and again at the gate. In fact I was last to board as the gate agent did everything she could to try to release a J seat for me, to no avail.

That would be very annoying. I assume that you were holding a QF ticket?

Interesting, LAN must have a different codeshare agreement where they effectively buy the seats rather than return them to the pool close to departure!

Just received a sweet SMS confirming UPG W to J on QF27 tomorrow. Was always optimistic as EF has been showing good inventory.

Not so optimistic about return on 21 Dec, given Anna's experience. EF shows no J, C, D, I seats on QF28 while showing J2, D0, I0 on LA807, the codeshare.
