Goodness knows why that dish was called Risotto. I couldn't even see any rice.

I might have tried the duck but not sure I'd bother with a beef stew aka oxtail. She didn't want to listen though, did she!

I thought the love story stuff was just a little gag making. Loved that woman's comment about it.

Speaking purely from a selfish perspective, if the duck had just been a glaze/sauce, as was alluded to when he brought the bottle to the first stage, it would have made stocking up on it a lot easier.

I'm not sure I'm too keen on either, though don't eat lamb so at least that's not a worry anymore. Expecting a high price point again though, as this seems to be a complete meal.

You're very lucky, I love that dish and wish I'd stocked up on more of it at the time!

Well, had the ribs been in the pack I may have, but to buy them separately was out if the question. Same for the oxtail really, if it's not included for whatever reason I'll eat something else.

Don't think I've had ribs before either. Not a terribly big meat eater.

BBQ at my place, I have the rib sauce.

Yowsers! I said to my partner that the duck would need to be around $9 and last night they said the duck would be the expensive option. But $11 for oxtail - that is a rip off as it is the cheapest of beef cuts around.

'value' to me comes down to the actual meat content per package/serving in 'ready to eat' meals.. if it's relative to its price ..then i will buy!! ... 'ready to eat'/'convenience' meals are a huge revenue raiser for any food outlet!! it's really only something i will buy as a 'treat' ... but if you can afford to have a fridge/freezer full of heat n eat meals...so be it

As I'm sure everyone is waiting for, here is my review, but first a little side chatter about the new places they find each week to hide the featured product and the trekking around the store I have to do (like an Easter egg hunt) to find it. This week I also found some leftover pizzas, still, meringue biscuits and even chocorn in the deli. The rib sauce was also still available, and in plentiful supply... though as I quite enjoyed that, I can't wait for a price drop there, but wondered which product will be getting the discount this week?

Now, onto the review. Hiding next to the flavoured milk (because sure, why not, beef stew goes so well with milk) was the Butcher's Secret, Hearty Stew. As it was simply in a fridge, this product wont last to 2014 like all the others, instead expiring in less than a month. At $10.99, it was already bad value, even for a dish that serves 2. For any health nuts, it also accounts for 40% of your DI for fat, 47% for sat fat!



I decided to treat Yvonne to lunch, as a fellow taste tester of everything I've bought from Recipe to Riches, and luckily she really liked oxtail. However, there's a sudden realisation when you remove the sleeve and stare at the tray - for $10.99 all I'm getting are 4 oxtails!



Luckily I had some mashed potato I prepared earlier, but the broccolini would have to wait for another meal as I didn't have time to steam it, with the tray already in the microwave. After all, this was meant to be a quick lunch and taste test.



Plated up, it looked good, and truth be told, tasted good too. The meat was tender, but sometimes hard to get off the bone. Out of the 4 pieces (2 each), 2 had meat that practically flaked off and 2 had meat that required bringing the bone to your teeth. Messy and not appreciated.

The package advertises 500g, but the serving size is listed as 200g on the back, with 2 servings per pack. I'm inclined to think it was a little less than even that.

Considering all the attributes, the price, quality of the meat, what you get with it... it's simply not worth it and I think this is my first not worth it. For $11 I expect a full meal in the package, and if I'm getting what is generally considered to be a cheap cut I don't want to be paying a premium. They've missed the mark here.

Yes, they were worried about the duck being too expensive.

I was on the woolies site today and there have been two BBQ sauce winners.

Based on the packaging, this winner is made by the same company which makes (or made) a certain type of 'premium' chilled ready meals for Woolworths. They were always priced around the $8-$9 mark (a year ago), so the price isn't too surprising.

But agree it is way too much for what it is.

Tried the oxtail for lunch today and I've gotta say, this is the first one I've actually been disappointed with, especially considering it was by far the most expensive. I found that not only was $10.99 for 4 pieces of meat poor value, but it was mostly bone and fat/grizzle, with a bit of meat on each one. The taste was okay but nothing special. They should have gone with the duck on this one.
