Sorry if this question has been answered before , I have searched the threads and cant find a similar scenario.

I am almost at the end of my rwt trip with Qantas flying business. I started off in Brisbane flying QF. I booked the trip on frequent flyer points and at one stage needed to fly from Dallas to Houston. QF advised there were no seats available for the dates I required, so advised me to book an internal flight myself which would be cheaper than they could do for me.

I booked on AA, and as I flew directly from UK to USA, and booked a connecting domestic flight with AA I was able to book my luggage straight through to Houston, after clearing customs with it in Dallas.

On the way back, I will fly from Houston to Dallas on my return AA domestic flight, spending 4 days in Dallas, before connecting with my rtw itinerary. I then fly from Dallas to Tokyo.

I am wondering what excess baggage charges will be applied in Houston for the domestic flight ? I have two large cases and one carry-on, and a handbag.

I will show my rtw itinerary at check- in as I believe that as I have an onward flight to Japan, that will allow me two checked bags?

All very confusing for me. Hope someone can clarify so I know where I stand.

since the AA flights are on a domestic ticket separate from the RTW, I think you are out of luck in claiming that it is part of the RTW. The 4 day stop-over also does not help as it is not a connecting flight to a flight leaving US either. The cost of two checked bags would be $25 + $35 = $60.

The exceptions to this are below. Do you fall into any of these categories.

  • For customers traveling to or from destinations in Brazil, Chile and Peru
  • Customers who purchase full-fare tickets in Economy Class
  • Customers who purchase Business or First Class tickets
  • Active U.S. Military personnel traveling on orders or personal travel
  • Active U.S. Military dependents traveling on orders
  • American Airlines AAdvantage® Executive Platinum AAdvantage Platinum or AAdvantage Gold members
  • Alaska Airlines MVP Gold 75K, MVP Gold and MVP members
  • oneworld alliance Emerald, Sapphire or Ruby members
  • Customers flying on the same reservation as an American Airlines AAdvantage Executive Platinum, AAdvantage Platinum or AAdvantage Gold member or oneworld alliance Emerald, Sapphire or Ruby member regardless of frequent flyer status or fare type (not applicable to group bookings)
  • First and Business Class MileSAAver® Awards
  • First, Business and Economy Class AAnytime® Awards
  • First and Business Class upgrades confirmed prior to check-in

Thanks MrHyde, none of the above, I guess $60 is fine as long as my bags aren't overweight, still nothing wrong with trying to charm the check in staff, but of all the oneworld airlines I have found AA to be the least accommodating. I wish Qantas had told me about this though , when they advised me to book this domestic flight separately, I would have liked a price from them first , then I could have made an informed decision. I should have done a bit more research prior to my trip.

I'm not sure it would have made a difference whether the flight is part of a RTW or not. My understanding of the One World rules (and they might be wrong) is that the baggage policies of the airline you are flying apply. So, even if the domestic flight was with AA, the best scenario would have been 1st bag free and $35 for second bag (if that leg is in economy). If the flight was connecting to an international flight, then you could have got a higher allowance based on the international flight requirements. With the 4 day stopover, that is no longer a connection.

I think BA are far more strict in their baggage policies. I know that I was on a One World fare and got stuck with BA and their 23 Kg limit per piece even though I was QF Platinum at the time.

The oneworld Explorer fare product includes two free pieces of checked baggage at 23kgs each, as a minimum (paragraph 1 of the rules). A more generous allowance provided by the operating carrier, particularly when travelling in a cabin other than Economy, would apply but the 2 x 23kgs free is the bare minimum.
