Recipe to Riches

Price is again quite high, but then it does include 2 pizzas so it's probably appropriate at $7.59. Does anyone regularly buy frozen pizzas?

Normally a frozen pizza with toppings already on it would cost $5 - $7.

The contents of the box require 3-4 hours to defrost for starters, and then you find out that as it's a DIY kit all that's included is the dough and sauce. In retrospect, this makes perfect sense. But at the shelves I grabbed it, left, got home and discovered I needed to buy the toppings!

This seems quite smart from Woolworths' perspective. If one of the strategies behind this show was to get people into their stores, this will also get people spending more as they have to buy the ingredients to make the pizzas. Suddenly $7.59 becomes more like $15 - $20...

I do like your idea about a suggested toppings kit but if the average person was too lazy (maybe not the best word, but you know what I mean) to add their own toppings, it would defeat the whole purpose of the kit as they would surely just buy a regular frozen pizza which already has toppings on it.

Touché.

Back to the shops I go.

But I thought they made a big deal about people not having to traipse across the store to collect their toppings? Yes, I know they said that.
In our Woolies store the frozen items are at the opposite end to the fruit and veg; smallgoods and specialist cheeses.

On special they are normally $3.50 per pizza (Dr Oetker - yum), I do like the current Select Pizzas which are often $4 while Homebrand is $3.20 normally. No specials on Frozen pizza this week, funny that.

And yet it would give the store two items to sell probably at a higher cost than the single item. The added benefit is that the consumer believes they made it themselves therefore the extra cost is better value than a totally prepared item.

I usually buy the McCain ones which cost $6.25 at my local Woolworths - maybe it's time to try something else!

Guys, making your own pizza is super easy. Takes five minutes and better than the store/takeway product. You do need a pizza oven (costs around $150 for the electrical variety). The trick is to cook the base long enough without burning too much. High heat for just a couple of minutes then reduce and let it bubble away. And as I posted earlier Bazaar pizza bases (3 small for around $6) are the best. For the sauce, I always add Beerenberg Hot Tomato sauce to the paste. Yum.

I do both, make my own and by premade when Markis10jr (Pizza and Pancake aficionado) visits for the weekend, but I dont use a Pizza oven as I have my Weber Q, just replaced my gas bottle after 7 months cooking every second dinner on it!

Is there nothing better than sitting on a verandah eating a pizza made from the weber Q :) But they are a little more expensive than the electrical one - we have both, the weber Q is at our river shack.

Considering the electric one is 8 gas refills in cost before even before electricity use (which is 4 years of Gas for my Weber) I am pretty happy, not happy that my electicity bill for the quarter when from $150 to $200 yet I used less energy, grrr.

When I make my own pizzas, I use the McCain frozen pizza bases which thaw during preparation and cooking so little lead time needed. In Melbourne the bases are about $6.40 for 3 medium size bases. I use a 79cent tin of generic tomato paste which covers the 3 bases. Total of $7.19 for 3 pizzas worth of base and sauce. Based on the previous posts the Receipe to Riches product is $7.95 for 2 bases and 2 sauces. Yes, I think they have the pricing structure wrong again.

This is very different from the previous products as you have so much you need to add to the product before it becomes a full snack or meal. I guess some could argue that the product counts for two meals but I still think it works out much more expensive than the other products. I won't be trying the recipe to riches product.

I don't really watch this show but caught the first few minutes last night. The hosts started talking about a how they were looking for a meal in a box but end up choosing 2 desserts!

I hadn't eaten frozen pizza in years an then one day I tried the Dr Oetker one was surprised at home much they had changed for the better. I now always have at least one or two in the freezer for when I can't be bothered cooking.

First up was to cut up some toppings.

In the oven.

The end result. Overall, it tasted great. The sauce was really nice and the base tasted good too. I was happy with my first solo pizza making attempt, as was the company I was with.

Not entirely sure it's worth my effort, but it was relatively simple. If I wanted a home made pizza it's a good product.
