Would you like to upgrade yourself?

I actually received this offer in April this year, and paid about $550 to upgrade the Abu-Dhabi-Sydney leg of my Dublin-Canberra journey. A bargain at the price. I used points to upgrade Dublin-Abu Dhabi, so was Business Class the whole way home (apart from the Virgin flight to Canberra).

I wonder what full-fare paying business passengers will think of their cabin being filled up. But I guess you pay for a seat, not a whole cabin!

There were empty seats on my flight, so obviously not everyone received or took up the offer.

maybe we can post our upgrade bids here like they do on biddingfortravel.
Im thinking of bidding for F ug from J AUH SYD in july

wonder what i should bid.

I expect it wil depend how many other people are bidding! I bid basically the minimum amount they allowed. It has an indicator of how likely you are to be successful, and the indicator showed my bid was very unlikely. But I got it anyway. So bid what you can afford or are willing to pay.

Not every booking gets the email to offer to upgrade. Depends on type of fare purchased etc
I am hoping I get an email for my flight from AUH to KUL in Aug

I got an email offering me an upgrade and given that this flight was paid for by work I think this is a brilliant idea! I'm doing SYD - LHR via AUH so have bid $1K for the long legs (SYD - AUH) and the minimum $635, for the LHR - AUH leg back. The AUH - LHR leg I have decided not to bid as I have a 24 hour stopover in AUH for a day and can handle doing the 7 hours in Y a day after.

I'll post here if the bids were successful or not - wish me luck, particularly with the long flights!

Yes, I really wonder about this strategy. Its probably not so much the cabin filling up with the great unwashed but the fact that you probably paid 8-12K for your ticket and the bugger beside you might have paid as little as 2500 or 3K.

I'm sure other airlines (in the USA?) have tried this strategy before and found it creates a massive disincentive for pax to pay full J or F fare and instead, eventually, people all start playing the lottery. You'd have to think that ultimately this would translate into lower earnings as the average price per seat starts dropping to the natural market rate rather than the inflated airline set seat price.

I wonder if they will persist with this idea? It may well prove to be a taste tester type deal, similar to the unbelievably cheap J domestic deals that DJ used to offer (400$ + 13,800 points transcon PER-SYD return!!). Its gets your audience in the premium seats and liking what they see. Hopefully, when you remove the trial, a percentage of your customers will continue to enjoy the product but at a higher price point.

Etihad auction upgrades CDG AUH

Has any one ever received a bid offer to upgrade on a CDG AUH flight ? How much was the minimum amount ? Thanks

Re: Etihad auction upgrades CDG AUH

Managed to get a upgrade through the auction from Abu dabhi to Dublin, this was 660 subg dollars. Didnt get the upgrade accepted for the Singapore to Abu dabhi segment, this I did at the airport for 440 sing dollars. So this can work

Meant to add I just took the minimum bid for the upgraded flights in the auction .

Re: Etihad auction upgrades CDG AUH

Can you tell us the amount you paid for the Dublin leg? Sounds like you got a great deal but What's a subg dollar?

Plane loads no doubt help determine the level of interest. Our flights in and out of Sydney were full in J and also to Milan. Our flight from Dublin would have been lucky to be half full. Doesn't help much for the killer leg.

Worth mentioning the lounge in Dublin is smallish but more than adequate providing an a la carte breakfast service before the 9.20 flight.

Yes indeed it was a lovely farewell to Dublin ! I agree it is smallish but the load when I was there was low and as you say breakfast was just right .

Yeah, love the Dublin lounge. I had a very nice meal and free beers before flying back to Sydney Business Class all the way. Waiter service as opposed to the self-service of the lounges in Abu Dhabi and Sydney.

Re: Etihad auction upgrades CDG AUH

Just wondering, how long before the flight is the auction upgrade email received ? Thanks.
