Qantas announces greater access to China

Not having a go, but what was the cause of the accident you have posted? ;-)

Bolt came loose from a slat track and punctured the fuel tank on landing, causing a leak that turned into a fire at the gate.

People often get China Air mixed up with Air China - both have pretty average safety records with fatal hull losses in 2002.

perhaps highlighting the QF partnership was with the right Chinese airline? is it really such a big deal?

Tough call, after all there was this:

China Eastern Airlines to improve pilots’ English | AeroATCBlog

Which does not seem to have helped with this:

China Eastern Airlines Jet Involved in 'Major Incident' on Runway

Same thing affects most chinese carriers because unlike the rest of the world, English is not the designated language for ATC in their country. 6 years ago there were 8000 chinese pilots, of which only 600 have proven English comprehension.

Well China Airlines is from a different country.... not a big deal but it just seemed a bizarre random thing to throw in to the thread.

Same people, including most in China would disagree ;)

Well we could continue the discussion in a separate thread, shall we start one since you sound like you would like to keep talking about it... I'd be happy to join!

I don't quite understand why you would show a youtube video of a Taiwanese airliner on fire in this thread?

Maybe I could post a pic of the burnt out Thai 737-400 at Bangkok, a Qantas jumbo that crash landed in Bangkok, a pic of the wreckage of a Singapore 747 in Taipei... but none of it is relevant

Umm, seems obvious to me that china eastern isn't even remotely similar to Thai or Qantas or Singapore. Unline China airlines - Regardless of the country of the airline. I'm sorry that you couldn't get the relevance. Lucky some of us did.

The country is irrelevant. It's the name. (to misquote John howard)

ah oh so if its got Chinese in the name it's no good :)

Well the comparison to Thai was that one of their 737s exploded on the ground in a similar fashion (for different reasons), not all that long ago! And since a burning 737 on the ground was brought up I thought it was relevant. But I'm sorry you couldn't get the relevance, fortunately some of us could.

Its always a good conversation starter with the Taiwanese taxi drivers, and as I mentioned earlier mistaking the two airlines origins is quite common, although its usually greeted with more empathy....

Sure is a very common misconception, I do agree with you there. I will choose to avoid the topic with the taxi drivers though ;)

That's not what I said at all. Get a grip. Unfortunately, the link is not the type of aircraft. So again you've had a failure in making an irrelevant connection
Perhaps you should take a chill pill if you can't handle a joke.

Back on topic and to much more important things...(until the plane catches fire...) ....so as a WP will I be able to get into the Melbourne First lounge if I am flying MU to Shanghai (with MU ticket rather than QF)?

No is the answer I suspect.

I reckon you will need a QF flight number.

I really don't understand why QF doesn't partner with CX a long time ago. Both are OW airlines, and CX is five star airlines. HkG is fantastic airport for transit. Now it is at a point that they almost "hate" each other esp with set up of JQ HK.

There has been a long history of appeared not liking each other..

Any thoughts on the quality of China Eastern? And safety?

They're ok. Have done two trips from OZ & many dom flights.

The two Int flights - they ran out of beer, wine & the more appealing meals.

If one must posts a link, I suppose you can use this one. Fast forward to 1 minute-ish for the interesting parts. And if anything, it's handled reasonably well.

Well thanks for that...

....a lot happier now..

.....so I still don't get into the First lounge before all the excitement of actually flying and all that comes after....?
