from email received today from qantas..

Qantas has announced a significant expansion of its codeshare agreement with China Eastern Airlines, giving customers better access to major cities in China and meeting strong demand from the business market.

The expanded codeshare arrangements mean Qantas customers will now be able to choose from 17 direct Qantas or China Eastern services between Australia and mainland China each week - with onward connections via 11 Chinese domestic destinations. The main purpose behind this is to support growing corporate travel and tourism between Australia and China.
there is info in qantas news room... (i cant post as only 9 posts..)

EDIT...that was my 10th post...so link below...

Wasn't this announced at the beginning of April? Strange that email correspondence would only be sent now

ah ok. I obviously missed it previously. *so a Mod can merge or delete this.

I received it today in "Your Business Newsletter from Qantas Airways".
So if it was announced in April, it is possible that this is the first opportunity they have had to put it in the newsletter.

Any thoughts on the quality of China Eastern? And safety?

Having never actually flown them, my only thought is at least they're not China Airlines...

I travel all over China, and they have been similar to all other Chinese airlines , but don't expect any privileges.
Seems an odd combination as they are entrenched in the Skyteam alliance. Very interested how this will effect FF re point/ credits. Not that there is many options on this in China anyway

Such a big market with rapid growth, wonder how long it will take China to get there range of domestic airlines up to a decent standard in comparison to other world airlines...

I guess buying their planes from Boeing and Airbus will get the hard product up to a similar level, depending on how they choose to fit out their J class and entertainment systems, more the soft product including F&B that will probably take a while???

I've flown China Eastern a few times within China (in fact my last two flights with them was 4 weeks ago) and found them fine.

They were actually very accommodating;

A group of 5 of us were flying SHA-PEK on a 6pm flight but arrived at SHA a few hours early. We asked if we could get an earlier flight (4pm) but they said that was going to be delayed, as well as the 6pm flight. They put all 5 of us onto the 5pm flight (all aisle seats) which departed on time.

3 days later, 3 of us were returning (PEK-SHA) and they were again able to put us on an earlier flight with no issues.

I don't quite understand why you would show a youtube video of a Taiwanese airliner on fire in this thread?

Maybe I could post a pic of the burnt out Thai 737-400 at Bangkok, a Qantas jumbo that crash landed in Bangkok, a pic of the wreckage of a Singapore 747 in Taipei... but none of it is relevant

At the recent Qantas coughtail evening in ADL, one of the problems (for me anyway) is that both QF and MU do not offer Y+ into PVG (QF129; SYD-PVG, MU; MEL-PVG).

The recent re-scheduling of QF127 (SYD-HKG) to an earlier departure time from SYD means that if I want to fly the long-haul sector in Y+, I can no longer depart ADL on a Sunday morning and arrive in PVG Sunday evening using QF.

Time to switch to CX?

I've flown with them domestically. They are OK - not awful, not fantastic. But always fly in "First class". For domestic services within china, I prefer China Southern.

Because I can? Who are you to determine what is relevant or not anyway?

PS - If you feel the need to post those pics then please go ahead and do so!

Well sorry but because you can isn't a very good reason...
