Do people have any comparative experiences they can share with regard to recommended tailors, and general pricing/quality/tips on tailoring in both?

I'm a happy customer of William Cheng in HK, but am wondering if I should give Shanghai a go if the quality/service is the same and of equal or cheaper cost. But don't want to cheap out on price to get an inferior suit.

If you want quality stay away from the fabric market in Shanghai. While there are gems if you can find them - you need to do a lot of research. From what I understand, the front shops in the market outsource to any one of a number of workers out the back - so you could end up with different results on two visits.

For good good quality tailors see this thread from FT: Looking for a good Men's Tailor in Shanghai - FlyerTalk Forums. According to that thread a suit from a good tailor can be start at RMB3500 upwards (compared to just RMB600 if you went to the fabric market - but of course the latter might only last you a month)

I have been going to Sam's in Hong Kong for 20 years,he knows me and what I want in regards quality. I think a tailor is like a barber once you find one your happy with then you should never change.
