And now I'm home. Had a great night with Jessica and Boeta, great conversation and stories. The food was fine although the order of delivery wasn't the best.
What surprised me was when I was checking my operating A/C today it was also VH-EBN, but I had a more of a look and discovered that for the flyover they had sent the aircraft from SYD and returned to SYD!?
Well - they wouldn't want to fly it SYD-MEL- do a quick fly past - MEL-SYD would they? That would mean actually having to go to all the trouble of operating a widebody revenue service on a Sunday, and then trying to fill the seats on an A330 on that day, what a hassle!
Or here is an even crazier idea -and I know this is a bit out there - but how about operating the aircraft as revenue service into MEL on the Sat night, fly it around for the pre-race air display, and then use it to fly some pax out of Melbourne on a Monday? You know - matching capacity to demand.
Pretty lame effort flying a Qantas A330 for the F1 airshow but goes to show that all the B744s and A380s are busy earning revenue.
I don't think it would be too hard to sub for a 763 service from a capcity point of view between MEL and SYD.
I suspect that it may be more related to maintainance / positioning.

Possibly correct - as may have been a post-maintenence "shake out" flight, or maybe even a check/training flight for A330 pilots. Certainly positioning an aircraft SYD to SYD and burning a lot of fuel without any revenue does not seem to make sense.

Unlikely to be maintenance given its done in Brisbane on the A330s, more likely they had spares in Sydney which are easier to use and take less time/less risk than subbing to Melbourne then doing the trip.
